“Big Slide” is a three-act play set in the autumn of an unspecified near-future year, at an Adirondack “great camp” where three generations of the Freeman family have taken refuge from New York and Boston during a severe national political maelstrom. We are never fully apprised of the exact nature of this event, but it appears to involve a coup d’etat in the White House and the uprising of local militias all over the nation in response. The estate at Big Slide is isolated from these events, but news dribbles in by radio. The electricity has stopped working and law enforcement seems to have been suspended, making it dangerous to travel even to the nearest town for food and necessities. The thirteen members of the family, ranging from the dying patriarch, Clifford Freeman, to his grown children and their spouses, to the two teenage step-siblings, Raven and Zach, struggle to work out how they will organize themselves for survival in the months ahead against a background of old and deep personal grievances with each other. ... snip ...

I like James and his work but I think that austere times call for the return
of the bigger than life Broadway show.

"Doom - The Broadway Musical."

Big tap dance numbers full of buff babe and stallion zombies
with the Grim Reaper center stage with a diamond studded and chrome
plated scythe and monster bling poking out of the mug hole of his
"hoodie of oblivion". Now that's a show James.

Big show tunes like:

"Cheatin' On My Bankster With The Reaper Man."

"Bettin' Our Bones On The Silver Bullet."

"Hope I Was Right When It All Goes Wrong."

"Bunkerman Loves Zombiegirl"
(Walmart ammo salesman becomes the greeter.)
(This one always gets me because they both were only .22)

A guy who buys some tickets for Doom should have the right to
expect it will be unforgettable and larger than life. I thought it
would be a nice touch to have a Carmen Miranda number with
the produce crusted hat and castanets too, but then I realized
it would take something beautiful and touching and make it
kitsch and gaudy.

Good idea! Put Mel Brooks in charge of it. He came up with "Springtime For Hitler"!

listen to a reading of the first act here: http://kunstlercast.com/

As with World made by Hand, his dialogue is a little forced, but overall very good and satisfying DoomPorn.

Well, I didn't make it past 20 minutes into the podcast recording before getting bored. Maybe it would be better in a theatre...

James is a master of sardonic wit. Yet for some reason his fiction doesn't shine as much.

Still planning to read the next book in the World Made By Hand series though.
