not prepared at all really, in terms of actually being able to be self sufficient. i doubt many people are. if my electricity went off today, i'd be screwed.

thing is though, whats the difference between having a couple of weeks of food, then dying and just dying because you dont have food - if things get that bad?

thats why im not so sure having a stockpile of stuff is going to help - in the medium term - i.e. more than a few weeks/months.

i'm going to make sure we have some first aid stuff, and medical stuff. i also think ill keep some very large mineral water bottles in storage, and also some cans and dry foods like rice, oats etc.

as for heating, well i dunno really. natural gas does that for me, and i think that would fail if the electricity failed. i'd have to rip out the gas fire and start using wood.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')oving from PO awareness to survivalism right now means that we have given up hope of a peaceful transition. We know longer believe that a soft crash is possible and now we have to stock up on the guns/ammo.

Well, I'm not gonna stock up on guns/ammo (though I'm sure many will!), but the rest of that statement is pretty accurate, I'd say. Actually, it's probably been pretty accurate for the last 20 years. It's just MORE accurate now. It's going to be soon. It's going to be quick AND long-lasting. And it ain't gonna be pretty (much less peaceful). Is that what I WANT? Nope. Is that what's gonna HAPPEN? Yep. Sorry. Really am. :(

Go to Doomerosity level 3! We are at peak oil DEFCON 3! Withdraw all nonessential personnel! Plant a few more different kinds of things in the vegetable garden!

I first got wind of PO in The "Southern Sierran" which is the newsletter for the Sierra Club in my area of Lost Angeles. That was in '04 some time. Then I read Mike Ruppert's "Crossing the Rubicon" early in '05. I was familiar with the issues beforehand so only a little ancilliary fact checking was enough to get me convinced. I've been in commercial real estate for a while and the ridiculous run up in prices coupled with crap PE ratio in stocks and the run up in gold and crude was setting off alarm bells inside my head; something was up; all was not right with the world and I was reading and researching far and wide to find out what it could be. The dots connected themselves instantaneously for me. It took me about 48 hours of intense concentration to figure out what I was going to do for the short run (stagflation or conflation) and then the mid-term (MZB attacks). I'm fine tuning the plans as I go. Even then, PO could just be the froth on the surface of the tsumani given all the deeper ecological problems going down.

Go to Doomerosity level 4! Put all ships out to sea! Scramble all fighters and bombers! Get REAL GOOD at permaculture!

Stagflation? Conflation? MZB attacks?

Please explain the terms!

Inflation is obviously an increase in prices of everything as too many dollars chase too few goods & services. This can be good or bad. If you are a working stiff it is bad; it means your paycheck won't buy as much as it used to. If you're highly leveraged in income generating real estate it is good. It means your rental income rises while your mortgage payments stay put. Inflation can be mixed with economic contraction and stagnation just like PCP can be mixed with psilocybin or alcohol with sleeping pills or loaded firearms with toddlers-it's called stagflation and conflation. :(

Stagflation is inflation without economic growth. Prices rise in nominal dollars/pesos/baht whatever but no new jobs are created, output doesn't rise etc etc. Example: expenses on my apartment buildings rise, the mortgage stays the same but rents stay the same as well :( :(

Conflation is inflation with economic contraction. Prices rise, employment falls, output falls. Example: expenses on the apartment buildings rise, the mortgage stays the same, but rents decrease as tenants become unemployed and can't afford to pay the rents and have to move out. :( :( :(

MZB attacks = mutant zombie biker attacks. When TSHTF mutant zombie bikers will raid your ecovillage carting off your vegetables, virgins and booze, so you'd better lock n' load :-D
