General discussions of the systemic, societal and civilisational effects of depletion.

A significant, sustained power outage will occur in some part of the US as a result of sabotage and cascading failure related to the current system infrastructure.

The word 'terrorists' will be used repeatedly, with l̶i̶t̶t̶l̶e̶ no discussion of the issues or ideals involved in the decision of those responsible.

Same shit different day. No way can I believe we as a species are not beyond producing energy as we did 100 years ago. Something is going on, there is a reason for this, maybe the devils X knows why, eh?

What exactly have corporations like this one done to suppress new forms of energy and for how long have they been doing these evil acts?

What the hell, in 1974 I was shoveling coal into the schools boiler.....

My outrageous forecasts for 2014:
Cold fusion will be found to be a viable energy process leading to the demise of fossil fuel energy.
Farms will be reduced to 1/4 their size and produce 10 times as much food, due to advances in genetic agriculture.
Half the planet's land and oceans will be set aside as wilderness preserves, untouched by humans.
Nuclear weapons will all be dismantled.
Actual cures will be found for all types of cancers.
Rampant consumerism will end.
A major worldwide effort will be made to eliminate and remove plastic pollution.
New advances in converting atmospheric CO2 into limestone will reduce the level of CO2 and start a renaissance in stone architecture.
Spent nuclear fuel will be converted into safe elements that can easily be disposed.

Happy New Year
Once in a while the peasants do win. Of course then they just go and find new rulers, you think they would learn.

The price of oil will fall, and production will rise.

More problems @ Fukushima as spent fuel pool in reactor unit #3 has stability 'problems' that Tepco and Japanese government are unable to address.

All of the concerns surrounding the spent fuel pool @ reactor unit #4 actually are realized @ reactor unit #3.

Pops made much the same forecasts here, but more eloquently:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '.').. My outrageous forecast is things look really peachy early next year and everyone gets into a feel good groove and demand creeps up and up and then *wham* spare capacity tanks, the price zooms up and dashes all their hopes for happy motoring! BWAHAHAHAHA!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pops', 'S')o come on, read the leaves and tell us what you think the color of this year's black swan will be!

Zero Hedge and Karl Denninger declare themselves to be Keynesians, change their minds and decide they love Obama, and start telling everyone everything is hunky dory.

I'd say that's pretty outrageous.

The Chinese economy will collapse, reducing oil prices and saving Japan from a war. At least one major grain growing region will have a "once in a century drought". Justin Bieber will be arrested.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('careinke', 'M')y vision is for some serious disruptions. There are just too many swans out there for some of them not to hit. Here are some of the most likely sources:
...
6. A major natural disaster finally convinces governments to take serious action.
...

Interesting. Out of curiosity, what "serious action" would you expect from government?

More government in general to "take care of us"? More significant infrastructure preparedness (i.e. more spare parts, more maintenance, more robustness)? Actually planning ahead and not spending current resources to the breaking point, so when something bad happens we actually have meaningful resources to deal with it? Something else?

I just see so PROFOUND a disconnect between 99% of the public's lives and 99% of government policy -- and planning ahead to deal well with adverse events -- that I'm curious as to what you mean by "serious action".
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

In the US:
1). The far left will stop bemoaning income disparity, and stop blaming all aspects of poverty on the GOP.
2). The far right will stop engaging in science denial, and stop calling climate change and evolution evil conspiracy theories of the left.
3). Genetically created purple unicorns and flying pigs will gain the freedom to legally marry, and the left AND the right will support it.
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

I would be happy with:
1. taxing consumption instead of labor.
2. Stop subsidizing children.
3. Extra (continuously rising) consumption taxes on FF.
4. Bully Pulpit for Victory gardens, conservation, and living local.
