they are fellow human beings. Women owe men at minimum, unqualified, impersonal courtesy and respect because they are also fellow human beings.

BTW I'll hold a door open for anyone coming through after me, man, woman, child or, in one or two instances, dogs. It is just simple courtesy. However in some instances I would prefer men don't bother with these courtesies.

One 'gentleman' at the busstop a few months ago, held back for me to get on the bus before him. When I didn't move fast enough he grouched, "Well, move it!" and then got on behind me grumping all the way down the aisle about how women expect men to open doors and let them on busses first ..grump, grump ... no respect... grump grump. I was holding back for him to get on first as he and several others were in front of me and between me and the bus. It was very embarrasing and if he found it so distasteful I really wish he hadn't bothered.
Kind regards, Katkinkate

You are right of course Katkinkate, logically.

It is a feeling though, an emotional response to treat women with more respect than my fellow male. Logic isn't always what drives my actions and as it doesn't harm anybody I have no reason to change this behaviour.

I draw the line at showing animals respect on that level though! Holding a door open for a dog 8O

Amazing.

Not that I believe in being cruel to animals you understand, well up to the point of eating them.

In Cambodia about 3 years ago, the president encouraged more people to eat dog because of the stray dog problem. Yuck. It stopped us going on holiday there.

That proves what I have always thought: people are either nice or nasty.

You can teach manners to a nasty person, but it won't make a difference because they will manage to be aggresively well-mannered. And it doesn't matter if a nice person doesn't know the social rules where they are, because everybody can see that they are trying to make everybody comfortable.

Every time I see the sort of crass and rude behaviour in London I always think of Margaret Thatcher's claim that - There is no such thing as society, just individuals.". I makes me hoot with laughter when I now hear politicians in the UK pontificate about a lack of 'respect' and declines in behavioural standards. In reality people are behaving in just the manner that the prevailing political and economic ideology has relentlessly trained them over the past 25 years. You reap what you sow.

If there is no such thing as society, why is it she was able to introduce the "Community Charge"? Orwell strikes again!

It wasn't just Thatchers claim, it was what we the people wanted, we voted for that, we got the leader we deserved.

Just for the record I was too young to vote then, but there was no trickery, it wasn't spin, it was a choice.

A high tax, help the poor and weak, have good healthcare provision, subsidised public transport OR I'm all right jack screw the rest of ya.

We chose the latter.

Anyway..... a very good friend of mine has just had twins. They went through IVF and have been trying for years. They are over the moon.

They are acting like the opening excerpt from End of Suburbia, it really is a happy go spending world. New fridge, new car, new washing machine, new freezer. (I'm buying their old stuff 8) )

I will not mention Peak Oil to any new parents, not even my very good freind and I am aware that this is selfish, I am doing the wrong thing.

I know if I were to talk to him about his spending habbit he would think that rude and none of my business. We all know how he will take the whole depletion and lifestyle talk, I will be his good crazy friend.

I really should say something, I can't look at him and think 'oh well, you screwed up!'. I grew up with this guy. Hes a good guy.

Hope some of you have some ideas, 'cause I've tried nothin, and I'm all out of ideas, to quote someones quotey thing.
