Obama asks Congress to delay digital TV switch

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')resident-elect Barack Obama today asked Congress to delay next month's planned switch to all-digital broadcast television, warning that the TVs of millions of Americans could lose their pictures because of major problems in the government's preparations.

----

According to the Nielsen Co., about 6.8% of U.S. TV households, or 7.7 million homes, were unprepared for the digital switch as of last month, meaning they had no TVs capable of receiving a digital signal. The percentage is higher in Los Angeles, with 9.46%, or about 535,000 homes unprepared for the switch.

Oh my god, no more television! The horror! Some folks might actually have to resort to reading or, or --gasp!--- actual human interaction for entertainment! [smilie=flipando.gif]

I can't help but wondering, juuuuust a little bit, if their real concern isn't that a significant portion of the sheeple might actually start to wake up without their daily programming...

I bet Obama is worried that he won't be able to get the digital converter hooked up in time on his new TV in the White House.

1. Dumb people watch TV.
2. Dumb people cannot handle technology.
3. Dumber people expect them to go digital without losing much of their installed TV audience.
4. TV goes digital anyway.
5. Retail declines even faster as the TV idiots don't see commercials anymore.

No joke. I truly believe in my heart of hearts, that the loss of television will be a destabilizing event in North American civilization. It is not going to be good.

It's possible that some will underestimate the importance of this change in our lifestyles. Many millions of people will not purchase converter boxes in time, and will be forced to deal with not having television available to them.

I don't think of myself as too much of a tinfoil hat type, but I've seen what happens as a result of a loss of television to people whose movement is restricted.

The TV goes off, and people get restless.

TV = trance. There is abundant medical evidence for this. I think TV is a more potent sedative than many prescription-only narcotics.

I guess we'll see what we will see.

TV is not the monolithic entity it used to be. A lot of people have shifted to other forms of entertainment like the internet or videogames.

I honestly think the loss of TV for millions of people is a miracle from God. Just think of all the commercials that'll never be watched, and all those millions of dollars saved from not wanting (and buying) stuff. All those hours saved of kids being indoors with their brains rotting out watching the idiot box. Perhaps kids will learn to play outside once again, like I used to as a kid.

Sure, I watched TV as a kid, but it was within reason - I thought reading a book or playing chase outside was a lot more fun than stupid, boring TV anyhow. Although some of the ABC After School Specials were pretty good...LOL. Do they even show those anymore?

Note to Obama: you've got bigger fish to fry, let the Great American Blackout occur on schedule. Trust me, it'll do a country good. :-D

There's nothing tinfoil about it ayoob. Television is indeed an addictive drug. I remember reading studies decades ago where they would get families to forgo their television completely for a month or more, and everyone in the household exhibited all the classic symptoms of drug withdrawal, including irritability, restlessness, insomnia and even physical illness in some instances. It's one of the reasons I killed my TV years ago (apart from the endless stream of mind pollution)...

I had Miro installed for awhile. Basically kind of like an RSS newsreader for video. Think of it as Youtube on steroids, except you can only view content, not submit it (tho' of course you can to the individual sites, just not through the software itself).

About the only content I found consistently worthwhile was the TED Talks; most of the rest was typically inane user-submitted tripe or akin to the commercial swill found through traditional mediums. Of course i suppose there's probably some diamonds out there (there's a virtually endless number of sources), but I got tired of shoveling through all the mud pretty quickly...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cbxer55', 'W')hat about this? Allows you to watch the tube on your computer. I have not tried it myself, but have it saved in my favorites for a rainy day.

TVU Networks

If you're running Ubuntu, Firefox can't install the plugin for TVU. I've tried. Linux is choppy with video anyway. Works great in XP or Vista. Haven't tried it on a Mac yet.

Yeaaa... some good stuff, some not so good. I generally prefer reading with regard to those particular topic areas however...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')xplain the Miro logo on this page:

http://submedia.tv/stimulator/

Are you referring to the 'Subscribe with Miro' button on the upper right?

Like I said, Miro is like an RSS feed reader, except for video content. If you have Miro installed on your system, clicking that button will add a subscription in Miro to the site's video feed.

Try midori, or anything that uses webkit. All the flash plug-ins for FireFox blow IMO, which is a shame cuz the extensions are great.

Is not. What are you running it on, a 486?

I remember the day when I was BabyPeanut

http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic5847.html
http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic6107.html

and I used Linux to make world's first C-SPAN Peak Oil video on the Internet.

Everybody bitched because the video had MPEG-2 audio like a DVD and Windoze couldn't play that but Linux had no problems because with it because it wasn't all lame and shit like Losedoze is.

This is why our experiment with democracy is doomed. We have a substantial portion of the population that is so out of it that they cannot make fundamental decisions about their own ability to receive a TV signal.

That's why we had 100,000 people that refused to evacuate New Orleans despite the most explicit warnings ever given by the NWS.

there are more examples.

It's not about watching the TV on a computer, it's about producing TV on the computer.

Relevant content can only be generated when the priority does not involve pushing merchandise via commercials. You can't expose the state of the world via a medium that requires people to think that buying stuff they don't need is important.

If you want commercial TV bullshit why go to the trouble of using a computer when it's so complicated by comparison to a TV?

If you want a TV-like experience which has content that subverts corporations you want Miro.
