$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WildRose', 'P')MS,

"Beyond the Horizon" - what a beautiful song! Poetic and romantic.

I'm not very familiar with Bob Dylan's music - I think he was just a teeny-tiny bit before my musical awakening, which happened right around 1972 or so. Oh, but I did know a lot of the Beatles and a few other British groups, which was what I heard a lot of in Europe.

Your son sounds like quite an accomplished young man - you must be very proud of him.
yes I am. He and his sisters have redeemed me. I was something of a screw up in my youth. But I held on for dear life and put my soul into raising kids. They have repayed me and brought joy to me. .

I would have given my eye teeth to have had a father like you.

I am your friend, threadbear. Screw the world and all the evil it contains. BTW I know full well how squemish men are about professions of love. Silly really. Sure men need to to face other men who would rather be dead than admit emotions. Let's just call this a chick thread. And let it be known, that I love you chicks.

Yes, I see that. He is seeking, yearning... he has a picture in his heart of what this lifetime love looks like, but it's always just that far out of his reach.

"It's dark and it's dreary
I've been pleading in vain
I'm wounded, I'm weary
My repentance is plain"

A moment of despondence, but then...

"In the soft light of morning I'll follow you with my eyes
Through countries and kingdoms and temples of stone

Beyond the horizon, the sky is so blue
I've got more than a lifetime to live lovin' you"

The prize, however unattainable it's been, is still worth the pursuit; the vision he has of it keeps him going.

Lovely lyrics.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WildRose', '
')Lovely lyrics.
yes they are. Dylan doesn't have the fantastic flair for lyrics that he had when he was in his 20s, but he's still a fine writer. You should hear the performance of it on the new album, Modern Times. Classic Dylan lyrics:

Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
God say, "No." Abe say, "What?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done?"
God says, "Out on Highway 61."

Well Georgia Sam he had a bloody nose
Welfare Department they wouldn't give him no clothes
He asked poor Howard where can I go
Howard said there's only one place I know
Sam said tell me quick man I got to run
Ol' Howard just pointed with his gun
And said that way down on Highway 61.

Well Mack the Finger said to Louie the King
I got forty red white and blue shoe strings
And a thousand telephones that don't ring
Do you know where I can get rid of these things
And Louie the King said let me think for a minute son
And he said yes I think it can be easily done
Just take everything down to Highway 61.

Now the fifth daughter on the twelfth night
Told the first father that things weren't right
My complexion she said is much too white
He said come here and step into the light he says hmm you're right
Let me tell the second mother this has been done
But the second mother was with the seventh son
And they were both out on Highway 61.

Now the rovin' gambler he was very bored
He was tryin' to create a next world war
He found a promoter who nearly fell off the floor
He said I never engaged in this kind of thing before
But yes I think it can be very easily done
We'll just put some bleachers out in the sun
And have it on Highway 61.

Or this one, Tombstone Blues, (an excerpt):

Well, John the Baptist after torturing a thief
Looks up at his hero the Commander-in-Chief
Saying, "Tell me great hero, but please make it brief
Is there a hole for me to get sick in?"

The Commander-in-Chief answers him while chasing a fly
Saying, "Death to all those who would whimper and cry"
And dropping a bar bell he points to the sky
Saving, "The sun's not yellow it's chicken"

Mama's in the fact'ry
She ain't got no shoes
Daddy's in the alley
He's lookin' for the fuse
I'm in the streets
With the tombstone blues

This is the kind of stuff, that if NEO was to come back (and he will, just give it a few more days, he'll be a little sheepish at first, then come out with guns blazin' after a short while) he could say, "see, neocon pig, even your great Dylan would spit on you! heh heh, whatever. Daddy's looking for the fuse: i.e. Daddy is a terrorist.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('coyote', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'P')enderecki wrote "Threnody For The Victims Of Hiroshima". Listen to it and your flesh will crawl.

The Threnody is one of the finest postmodern pieces out there. I studied it for a bit back in music school. If you want something just as moving, just as modern, but maybe not quite so hair raising, you might try the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs by Gorecki. Haunting and beautiful.
listened to it again tonight. holy crap! just wait until humanity does it's thing. give me those old negro genius musicians. Whitey disparaged them but they were on top of it all. How else do you get over on people who despise you but to show your genius? Those guys were geniuses. There were so many of them in the mid century jazz movement.

Music

Unread postby Stratovarius » Sun 19 Nov 2006, 21:59:06

When I first found out about peak oil, one of the first things that came to mind was that after a while, I won't be able to listen to my favorite music anymore.

Since the 5th grade I've been deep into the electronica scene, my favorite sub-genres being trance and chillout/ambience.

Trance especially touches me so deeply and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I was so inspired by some of the songs I heard, I started producing my own music using the amateur program FL Studio and taught myself music theory.

I'm going to miss the lush new-agey instrumental music that I love. Concerts will have to take place in echo-y places like caves, to duplicate electronic echo chambers.

Regards,

L.

Everybody's view of the future is different, but I think there's a very strong probability that we'll have a fairly stable supply of electricity for the foreseeable future. We may not be able to waste it like most of us do today, but there will be enough to power a small stereo if nothing else. My little boombox uses a whopping 5 watts when playing CDs, less when listening to the radio. And even if electricity was out, I can power my MP3 player with AA batteries, which I can recharge with a solar-powered charger. I'm also thinking about experimenting with a bicycle-powered generator, which in theory would easily power my boombox for many hours. In other words, I personally think it's kind of silly to assume we'll be immediately thrown into a pre-industrial world just because oil production peaks.

That said, I'm also learning to play acoustic guitar. Fun to do, and no electricity needed.

I am going to invest in a solar-powered iPod in the near future, if, when it exists.

I've also considered learning to play piano or guitar.

Opinion on music needed!

Unread postby Newsseeker » Mon 19 Mar 2007, 10:29:35

Greetings,

This is a friend of mine who is going to be releasing his CD soon. This is his music (with the exception of Taneytown which is a Steve Earle cover). What do you think of the music? Do you like it or hate it? How would you improve it?

It is Southern rock and different. I am biased because he is a good friend of mine but I would really like to get your opinon.

I can't deal with country if it's not johnny cash, old judds, patsy kline or tammy wynette , I do think it sounds just as commercially viable as the other country I hear snippets of as I drive down the road ,If you want to hear some real good country try knuckle duster by white zombie, they're a new southern rock/country band that sounds a lot like your friend

Stultifying, insipid and cliche.

Should do pretty well on the country stations.

It sounds like every other country song on the charts today. In a genre bustling with Peter Keatings, this one will fit right in.
