MSM Peak Oil Coverage

Unread postby mos6507 » Mon 16 Feb 2009, 04:29:46

I have been collecting virtual news clippings from the homepage here, the oil drum, and keyword searches on news.google.com for about a year and a half. I've been pretty consistent about it throughout this period. So I've built a warchest of links. I've been very careful to prune away sources that are fringe or with an overly green bias. I wanted to focus on wellknown brand names that the layman would trust as a neutral source. So I've just whittled through my list and removed all the topical stuff about the last oil spike to get down to just nuts and bolts peak oil coverage. No other related stuff like overshoot or environmental doom. And generally I avoided video clips. I'm trying to stick to text-based articles although sometimes it is accompanied by a video clip.

Here it is in chronological order. Roll over the links and you'll see that it's all heavily-trafficked mainstream sites.

Now few of these articles present peak oil the way we'd like it to be presented. But they ARE talking about it, and getting people to think about it. So the argument that if only the MSM would present peak oil is largely bogus. Anyone who tries to stay current with the news would have stumbled on at least ONE of these pieces in their travels. So really it's not about J6P never hearing about peak oil. It's about denial. Certainly by the time T Boone Pickens became a household word, peak oil became a known concept. If people are not worried about it now, then it's shock to trance like Obama said.

The problem is that Peak Oil has not, so far as I have heard, been endorsed by political leaders. If they gave it emphasis, then the public would take notice, although most of them would still not grasp the principles. My observation is that unless you had a fairly numerate higher education, it is unlikely you will "get" the concept of what the Logistic Curve is about. Unless you are unusual that is. I have to say that I work amongst engineers in an energy company and only one or two other people in an office of about 30 know anything about Peak Oil. For the rest, mostly they are coming around to see that oil will be more expensive in the future, or they were before the oil price collapsed. In retrospect, that oil price collapse will be seen as the trick that let Peak Oil blind-side the world.

The French Government have been talking about the "apres petrole" era for some time.

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett has been trying to educate the public and his fellow law-makers about peak oil for years. I don't know if he counts as a "political leader."

I am disappointed that Al Gore didn't merge Peak Oil into his agenda. I have to assume he is not a peaker although there is no way in hell he hasn't been exposed to the material by now.

What's Al Gore up to nowadays anyway?
Haven't heard much about him after the movie hype wound down.

He got sidetracked back into direct party politics after he endorsed Obama and then sprinted down the last lap of the campaign with him. Now he's back to making speeches, this time sounding the alarm pretty much on the James Hansen doomer scale.
