Legal action begins

Unread postby Wildwell » Fri 26 Aug 2005, 07:39:13

I'll predict the same thing will happen with Peak oil with big users and certain governments and oil companies.

In a landmark judgment, a court in California has allowed a coalition of environmental groups to sue the US government over global warming - the first time a court has recognised the potentially disastrous impact of climate change.

A judge in San Francisco gave permission for the two groups, along with four US cities, to sue two federal development agencies that provide billions of dollars in loans to fund projects overseas. Some of the projects are power plants that emit greenhouse gases while others include pipeline projects that allow the transfer of oil.

"This is the first time a US court has given a plaintiff the right to go to court solely on the global warming issue," Geoff Hand, a Vermont-based lawyer in the case, told The Independent. "It's a great advance."

More money for the lawyers as the glaciers melt and the tundra thaws.Hitting them in the wallet at this point won't make much difference.Kind of like getting the insurance cheque for the loss of a loved one years after the accident.
I'm feeling gloomy today.

Notably, they seem to be suing over emissions in other countries. To me, this sends out a very self centered message that US emissions are fine, but emissions everywhere else are a problem.

Specop assumes these people complaining are the same ones that hop in their car to drive home, stop off at a fast food place for lunch on the way, then get home and turn on the lights....

He chuckles at the irony of it all.

I thought you said car drivers were not the problem on the other thread? 8O

Correct, he said "SUV drivers" were not the SOLE problem.
Aside from that, he didnt realize the lawsuit was against cars but thought it was against businesses.

Aside from that, Specop thinks it would be taking things out of context to bring things from that thread into this one.
One is about how certain people think SUV's are the cause of gas shortages.
This thread is about environmentalists who enjoy every faucet of our modern society bitching about the very means to get those enjoyments.

Specop sees very little correlation between the two.
