Hmmm...DJIA down 678 at the close. Probably not the end of the crisis just yet.

I think basically what we had yesterday and the first part of today, was just what you'd expect a very brief and tenuous respite from the rate cuts yesterday morning. It was a desperation move and only brought a brief lull in the bloodbath. I'd say this thing has another week to go? My SWAG would be a DJIA bottom some where around 6500-7000. Trying to call a bottom on that: Image

A SWAG is the best anyone can give at this point.

Down 678.91 for the day. We're doomed aren't we? And we have the Lehman Bros. CDS auction to look forward to tomorrow.

The DOW has lost 2000 points since Friday, about 19%. That can surely only be defined as a 'crash'?

Quarterly earnings reports are coming in and they look grim for the most part. The market now has to cope with that next, long chapter in the evolving disaster.

Ugh. The TED Spread just keeps getting larger. 4.23 and rising.

Ted Spread Nothing is unfreezing this market.

We're poised on the brink of a depression. No wonder banks aren't starting to lend. They'd be nuts.

It will pass its true equilibrium point on the way down, then correct slightly back up and settle. I still say bottom is somewhere in 3750-5500.

The TED spread new high is the most worrying thing of all. World governments have thrown absolutely everything at this problem and the situation is still deteriorating rapidly. Bank lending is almost totally frozen and the thaw continues to deepen. Maybe things are finally capitulating, there's nothing left to throw at the problem.

Do you know any virgins? Didn't a volcano erupt recently.

The god of volcano's and stocks is very upset.

Steps:
1.) Find a virgin.. gl
2.) Gag this supposed virgin
3.) Throw it in a volcano.
4.) Market Confidence restored.
5.) Rejoice, wait for peak oil

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Heineken', '.')..679 points at the close. Absolutely stunning. Maybe this was capitulation??...

So much for your gut feeling, and mine.

Jesus H. Christ.

Stocks Stomped in Financial Freefall

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nother washout overtook Wall Street Thursday, sending major averages down as much as 7 percent as traders bailed out of the credit-battered stock market.

The market's afternoon selloff sent the Dow below 9,000 for the first time in five years, as unshakeable fears from the credit freeze combined with the expiration of short-selling rules to beat down stocks for the seventh straight day.

Selling grew downright feverish in the final hour as exasperated traders described an air of hopelessness and questions circled over what the market's capitulation selloff point might be.

"This is a disaster, I can't put it any other way. You would think capitulation would have been the 1,300-point loss in the first three days this week," said Dave Rovelli, managing director of US equity trading at Boston-based Canaccord Adams. "No one wants to own stocks. ... It's just constant negative energy."

With no end to selling in sight, there were more calls for action by policymakers.

"We need to get some traction at some point in time here to get some sort of rally," BlackRock Vice Chairman Bob Doll said on CNBC. "We've been in this freefall zone, and the Fed's going to have to get bigger, bolder and in front of things I'm afraid."

Responding to an on-air question, Doll agreed the stock market had crashed.

Replace virgins with any number of fat cat CEO's or anyone that received millions while the company/economy tanks. Then I would be on board.

FYI, on October 19th, 1998, the Dow closed at 8,466.45. Given or taken 100 points, we are where we were 10 years ago!

Apple pie, anyone?
On 9/29/08, cube wrote: "The Dow will drop to 4,000 within 2 years". The current tally is 239 bold predictions, 9 right, 96 wrong, 134 open. If you've heard here, it's probably wrong.
