$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'R')ising fuel costs hit marine fish output
Mitul Thakkar / Gandhinagar June 02, 2005
Marine fish production in Gujarat has registered a decline for the second consecutive year in FY05, even as the state government is making concerted efforts to increase fish production.

From 7.43 lakh metric tonne produced in FY03, fish production has slipped to 5.84 lakh metric tonne during FY05. A rise in fuel cost, which accounts for a major chunk of operational costs, is said to be the cause of this decline.

At present, the ports and fisheries department of the state is working on the provisional data, which shows that the marine fish production has fallen by over 21 per cent in the two-year period. During FY04, the marine fish production slipped by 20 per cent compared with the previous fiscal.

This is great for the ocean. When cheap diesel is gone, maybe the battered fish stocks will have a chance to recover.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gt1370a', 'S')o it's official... we have hit Peak Fish.

We hit Peak Fish a while ago. We need fleets today to get what 3 or 4 boats would get 20 years ago.

I have a friend who ran a commercial fishing ship. Stored a gazillion tons of fish. He took it around the world looking for fish and just broke even on the adventure. He told me when they would pull into port to diesel up, it would take 300,000 gallons to fill the tanks. Personally I think you are going to see a reemergence of a sailing fishing fleet.....
