Bush is pushing cellulosic ethanol. That'll solve a multitude of problems. We won't have all those pesky forests around, so we'll be able to get anywhere we want with our SUV's. I noticed Grassley from Iowa stood up and cheered. He imagines the corn belt as one big gasoline producer. Unfortunately Mexicans have had the cost of their tortillas double. Get psyched. I feel like this speech marks the beginning of the realization that we are in trouble. Consequences are going to start to happen, soon.

The Oil Drum just posted this article on topic. Ten Fundamental Principles of Net Energy. They must have been reading Gazzatrone's thread.

Its been awhile since I read this post, but it does seem clear that the food we once ate for fuel is now food for fuel.

On a basic level, the EROEI problem concerned with biofuel is self evident and consequences of price rises in staple foods frightening. Add a little drought or crop failure, then we are really going to face up to some seriously difficult choices if we are putting all our eggs in one basket by hoping biofuels will be the cure-all.

I agree Revi soon maybe sooner than we'd care to imagine.

I have heard that the rise in the price of corn will push it's way throught the market and we'll soon be paying double the price we used to for eggs, meat and milk. It's not just the Mexicans who will be wailing then! It's enough to turn you into a vegan! You can get by without fuel, but food is pretty hard to give up.

The cost of feed corn has gone up quite a bit in the past year, I've noticed.

We'll all be paying a lot for food in the near future. That might help out the local producers. The price difference will be less between the corporate food and that produced by small local farms.
Buy local and save. That would be a nice thing to say!
