I liked it but I think it could have used more hard facts about our energy consumption and lifestyle habits. Or maybe profiles of Pocono People driving 60 miles each way in gas guzzlers to jobs in cities. While for me the movie was a classic example of preaching to the choir, I can see how typical suburbanites would get tired of hearing the experts give their spin.

I wonder if there is a follow-up to this film in the works.

Yes! There is a sequel coming out called Escape from Suburbia that focuses on the solution. They are interviewing people from an intentional community and people who are doing things about peak oil. I think that's where we should be, instead of what we're doing. Beyone chicken little into what we're all going to do about it.

I've seen it three times and I'm pretty impressed with it. I had read about pretty much everyone featured, but I was really impressed by Heinberg and Kunstler, who seem to have a firm grasp on all the implications of Peak Oil, plus I think they made the concept easy enough for a neophyte to understand. Ruppert and Simmons were both pretty scary, but to paraphrase Kunstler, people need to be shocked in order to wake up to the damage Peak Oil may inflict on civilization.

Before seeing this film, I had a pretty good understanding on how Peak Oil would affect Americans in regard to gas prices. But this film gave me a better understanding of how it would affect food production. Obviously it affects transportation of food, but also in growing it (pesticides & fertilizers). I think Kunstler's right, the suburbs are going to be the slums of the future.

I'm going to show this movie to my Dad this weekend. It should be interesting: I'm a staunch Democrat, he's a staunch Republican. He was kind of resistant to the idea of Peak Oil last time I brought it up with him, but I'm betting what Matt Simmons has to say in the film will open his eyes.

Anyone else have any good experiences sharing this film with others?

I had this in my Netflix queue, but it recently disappeared. I'd guess they didn't buy too many copies and those they had got worn out. So, I gritted my teeth and shelled out the $28.50 for the DVD.

I did find the first half fairly slow, like many people here. This might be because I'm already clued into PO and was waiting for "the good stuff" to come up. I think, the way it is now, the documentary eases people into this subject. I appreciated the fact that they mentioned that we all tend to assume the way things are right now is "normal," but this wasn't always and will not alway be the case. That's an important point to make for non-PO-aware watchers.

After screening it by myself, I definitely feel comfortable showing it to other people. I'll be making my best friend watch it this weekend. I'll be interested to see if it changes his mind at all. I brought up the subject with him once before, but he didn't seem to take it in.

I want that DVD

You can get it from a number of sites, I plan to get a copy, and from the reviews here it sounds like a good one.

Jim Kunstler in his book quotes Jung, in saying people can't take too much reality at once. It's probably better that this DVD is not total gloom and doom.

Success! I showed this documentary to my friend and it really got him thinking. As we watched it, he would pause and we'd talk about the points in the video. For the rest of the weekend, pretty much all we could talk about was how to prepare for peak oil.

Basically: The End of Suburbia worked!

I DONATED my copy of EoS to the local public library last fall--the librarian just told me it has been constantly on loan since and is now going to OHIO---from Montana.

People are starting to wake up.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('RickTaylor', ' ')I guess I'm still looking for the perfect peak-oil introduction then, though I really like Dr. Goodstein's video.

I've read Goodstein's book; he has a video?

End of Suburbia

Unread postby PhebaAndThePilgrim » Sun 31 Jul 2005, 19:22:25

Hi: I just ordered the community action pack of the film from Endofsuburbia.com.
You can resell 5 copies and keep the others for sharing at a reduced cost. Sure beats 28.50 a copy.
Those who say the first half of the film is slow are correct. But, this is only if you are already aware of peak oil.
For a beginner this film is just perfect. Reminds me of crossing the messenger with the court jester. Bad news delivered with a little humor.
My problem has been getting the film out to others.
When the community action pack arrives I will let the message board know how it goes.
There is another new peak oil film out. I can't remember the name of it now.

I'd give it 5/5.

I particularly liked the way they started on the blackouts, then gas, then oil.

If there were any improvement possible, I'd say the retro footage at the beginning needs more narration; it makes the film initially look like some insane run of 1950s adverts with no context, that will turn people off within the first 10 minutes. Only those who already know about PO will immediately recognise the context and grin.

For those generous people out there, this is a great idea for alternative ways of giving something back to your community in a constructive way. Buy up 5 copies of End of Suburbia and give them to your library. This movie was my first introduction to Peak Oil and I've shown it to everyone who was willing to listen.

I just found an old 30 minute BBC-report. Nothing new for the informed PeakOiler but nice to have some documentation in the streaming video format: {url=http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article8582.htm]link[/url]

Unfortunately, Link TV, as a public (read: no advertisers) network, broadcasts at this time, exclusively with DirecTV and Dish Network, only in the United States.

From their website:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')an I get Link TV on cable?

The FCC has mandated that satellite carriers reserve several slots for non-commercial networks such as Link TV. Unfortunately, similar FCC requirements do not exist for cable. As a result, obtaining distribution on cable is more difficult and not an option that is readily available to us. However, we are working to obtain cable distribution in select areas. We encourage you to contact your local cable company about receiving Link TV. If the cable companies know their customers demand Link TV, they will be more inclined to give Link TV a channel. In the meantime, we are available exclusively on DirecTV (ch. 375) and The DISH Network (ch. 9410) as part of their basic programming packages. If you are interested in acquiring a dish, below are the contact numbers:
DirecTV: 800-347-3288
DISH: 800-333-3474

It's a start but National TV to me is PRIME TIME on a non-cable channel involving either of the following: ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX..... that would have a better impact.

Jdelagado,
True, but it's a start. And there's a lot of folks who will see it who may have no idea what's coming. I call that progress.
