$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('JRP3', '
')Nissan Leaf should be going on sale end of this year, full EV, 100 mile range, probably around $30K

The Leaf is the one to watch for those who finally want to see a moderately priced freeway-capable pure-EV that seats more than 2 people.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('JRP3', '
')In a properly designed, lightweight, aerodynamic vehicle they can provide over 200 miles of range.
If the economy doesn't completely tank there is a good opportunity for low cost EV's to take over a large portion of transportation needs.

You're kind of late for that. The economy already tanked. Look to Aptera for what you get from EV startups. Tesla ain't exactly healthy either.

Aptera was destined to fail, like most 3 wheeled vehicles, not enough people want them. Even number of wheels rule the world over, always have always will.
Tesla, as much as I love the vehicles, may be aiming at a shrinking target, and Elon's drive for unnecessary design items, (Model S: seating for 7 so he can jam all his kids in, giant haptic touch screen, battery pack that can be swapped out), may price them too high to be profitable.
But if some company actually designs a basic, lightweight, aerodynamic vehicle, as has already been done in the past with the Sunrise, GM Precept, this would allow good usable range with a smaller less expensive battery pack. Economies of scale can still bring a lot of price reduction in motor, controller, and pack price.
Yes the economy tanked, but there is still a lot of room to fall further. If it doesn't I think there is still some opportunity for innovative vehicles to be built.
