In the battle between Mujahideen and Saudi Sulul forces in Al-Rass, 220 miles northwest of the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, the gun battle is continuing. The clash that broke out early Sunday has so far killed 3 Saudi (Sulul) security forces, 25 other security agents were injured, some seriously and one Sulul security agent was captured.
After the Mujahideen foiled a landing attempt by paratroopers as yesterdays events unfolded, orders were issued by the Saudi Royal Palace to the Interior Ministry to end the operation by any means necessary, even imploding the buildings where the Mujahideen are positioned if required, regardless of the potential of civilian and security casualties. A Saudi rapid deployment unit, emergency teams and commando squads were rushed from Riyadh and Madinah to reinforce Sulul security forces.
"The operation is continuing. The security forces have surrounded them. There is still gunfire from the besieged building," interior ministry spokesman, Brigadier General Mansur al-Turki, said.
Earlier yesterday, a large contingency of Sulul security forces arrived from Anizah and completely surrounded the town where the conflict is raging. Some sources indicated that poison gas was being used by the Sulul forces in an attempt to flush out the Mujahideen. A heated exchange of gunfire was reported and thick smoke rose over the Al-Jawazat quarter of Al-Rass. At least one Saudi vehicle was set ablaze and a residential house was completely demolished. At one point in the combat, the Mujahideen fired at a Sulul helicopter that was flying overhead, forcing it to increase altitude.
Saleh al-Aoofi, the leader of Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, was said to be in the Al-Jawazat area directing the battle. Other reports early yesterday suggested he may have been among the casualties however this information can not be validated.
While medical sources confirmed the casualties numbers among the Sulul security forces, there have not yet been any direct accounts in yet on Mujhideen martyred in the battle as of presstime. (JUS)
