Just saw on the BBC live feed that the nuclear SCRAM system failed and officials are trying to evacuate everyone within 2km of the plant.

why they waited this long to evacuate I can't understand. At 5 am EST they were telling people near the Onogawa plant to 'stay calm' and stay in place, all the while they were acknowledging that the shut down wasn't going as planned. I remember when we got the TMI evacuation order after being told for so long to stay calm. It was 'Don't worry, don't worry, don't worry,' then RUN AWAY. At least Met Ed reimbursed me 88.00 for evacuation expenses.

Its not at Onogawa, that is under control, at the moment from what Im reading it appears the reactor has shut down or partially shut down but there is no cooling liquid getting to the core so its exposed and getting warm. It appears to be a precaution to move people rather than a serious risk.

Moved to own thread.

Here's a report on what the tsunami did here in Oregon.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')rookings City Manager Gary Milliman said about 60 to 85 percent of the commercial dock is destroyed. Seven boats were swept out to sea, while several others sank or sustained severe damage, he said. The body of a man was also discovered on one of the boats, but the Curry County sheriff had told Milliman it is unclear whether the death resulted from the tsunami.

The 80 workers swept out to sea on a boat have been succesfully recovered.

But the grim hard task of working out how serious this was is about to get underway.
