Thursday, April 27, 2006, clergy from around the Washington, DC and MD area will gather in downtown DC to pray for the lowering of gas prices.

Sorry if this link is in french, but so far that's all I found.
Radio-Canada

This event is organised by Praylive.com. It's about time someone do something. Finally some rest for my wallet. Bush can already speak to god, so imagine a gathering in Washington!! For sure God will hear this time and will give more ressources to the american-people.

Fuck world peace.
Fuck world hunger.
Fuck world plagues.
Fuck world wars.
I'm praying that filling my tank up will cost less than $70, so I can continue driving Jenny to the mall, Billy to soccer practice, and the whole family to Chuck E. Cheeses, and so my gated, exurban abode won't suddenly become worthless.

If there is a God, I'm certain he's having a good laugh.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')D.C. prayer rally to seek lower gas prices

WASHINGTON, April 26 (UPI) -- A U.S. Christian group has grown tired of escalating gasoline prices and is set to stage a national prayer rally to lower the numbers at the pumps.

Various Christian clergy from around the country will convene around a Washington, D.C., gas station Thursday at noon to pray. For those who can't attend, a live Internet site and toll-free prayer line have been established.

In a release, the Pray Live group said many people are "overlooking the power of prayer when it comes to resolving this energy crisis."

Apart from sending a message to God, the rally had a message for humanity, said Wenda Royster, the group's founder.

Some pray to God, other to the market :)

Seriously, if you are one willing to defer to authority on all things out of mere mortal hands, praying to a deity to create more oil to power your cushy life (at low prices!) isn't that surprising. After all, did not water get turned into wine?

maybe if your faith is not so great you could try:
a) sugar cane/beet into....
b) corn + government subsidy into....
c) tar sands + natural gas into.....
d) cow manure into....
e) running water into....
f) the gentle or not so gentle breeze into....
g) tidal flow into....

or maybe one should read the beginning of the story about how humans were supposed to care for the world (at least the second story that fouses on the place of humans).
We should teach our children the 4-Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rejoice.

And I want to apologize to the entire planet on behalf of these misguided folks...

It's very embarrassing actually.

Maybe if we sacrifice our children Vesuvius will stop rumbling?

This is one of the funniest and most tragic things i have seen in years.

Oh well, it looks like the cargo cult that is western materialism is preparing to reveal itself in naked glory (or should that be shame?)

Seeing this, I wonder again about the moments when order was breaking down on Easter Island. What were their shamans advising them to do?

Oh, that's right, build bigger stone heads.

As a Christian, I am both shocked and embarassed. I think that these people have forgotten one of the fundamental tests by which we are to measure our own behavior. What would Christ do? Somehow I don't think it would include praying for lower gas prices. Actually, the episode of Jesus overturning the tables of the money changers in the Temple court seems to have a lot more similaritires to me.

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ?
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ?
I'm counting on you, Lord, please don't let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ?
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

That's the most bizarre thing I have heard in quite some time, and in those crazy times that means a lot.

It reminds me of when I was a child and prayed to god for all sorts of petty stuff and promised him all sorts of things for it...

Good points. Seems to me the louder one talks about Jesus, the less one has to act like him. "Amen"s instead of actions. Prayer as a show... These kind of people don't make me lol - a sigh and a chuckle at most. Praying for cheaper gas is, IMO, just as foolish as asking oneself what caliber Jesus would prefer for his concealed firearm.

Someone funnier than me said "the christian right is neither".

Just for the record, here is my translation of the article originally posted, though most of you have already figured out the gist.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')hurchgoers will gather Thursday in Washington to publicly pray for the lowering of gasoline prices, announces the American Prayer Organization (Pray Live on line).

Several leaders of religious organizations in Washington are expected to participate in the event.

The founder of Pray Live, Wenda Royster hopes that these gatherings in front of service stations in the American capital will remind people "who is truly in charge of our world: God".

Additionally, several influential democratic senators organized a press conference Wednesday in front of the gas station nearest the Capitol, the seat of Congress, to call for the Republican Majority to intervene.

Pardon my lack of knowledge of the proper names of your organizations, I am Canadian.
