Apocolyptic Teen Fiction

Unread postby Narz » Mon 13 Oct 2008, 22:21:44

At the library I saw this book (Life as We Knew It) on the return rack & it seemed up my alley so I checked it out.

The science is pretty bad/unrealistic in many places & the character development & quality of writing isn't exactly Shakespeare but it was definitely readable & even a bit captivating (once you suspend belief enough to play along).

It's about an asteroid that collides with the moon sending it's orbit much closer to the Earth's & causing massive global disarray (of apocalyptic proportions).

I imagine the author really wanted to write about climate change but thought that instead making it about some astroid attack would make it less controversial and/or give it more appeal to kids.

The whole climate change issue really pushes some people's buttons, mainly, IMO, because it makes people feel responsible & this triggers defensiveness. So probably this was a wise move on the part of the author.

About a four hour read on a long Greyhound bus ride. 3.25 stars.
