Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s grim forecast of humanity suggests that a “population bomb” would lead to a worldwide collapse in humans in the coming decades and everybody would start to see the evident effects by 2050.
Musk’s prediction was triggered by a tweet from a page called World of Engineering that said: “1950 (historical) world population – 2,556,000,053. Current world population – 7,712,343,478. 2050 (projected) world population – 9,346,399,468.”
Replying to that tweet on Friday Musk wrote: “Real issue will be an ageing and declining world population by 2050, *not* overpopulation.”
Musk also shared a Wikipedia link to an article titled, “Projections of population growth”.
“Yes, demographics, stratified by age, will look like an upside down pyramid with many old people and fewer young,” the multi-billionaire entrepreneur wrote further.
The SpaceX CEO’s theory believes that when an increasingly-elderly global population clashes with declining birth rates around the world in the near future a ‘population bomb’ would go off, web portal Futurism reported.
Musk first broached the topic back in 2017 when Musk replied to a publication saying, “The world’s population is accelerating towards collapse, but few seem to notice or care.”

When I was a kid around 1960, all the men worked 6 days per week, until 65 and died with 68 on average. Smoking and drinking was heavy in those days. Thanks to technology, better medical care, better hygiene, fitness, sport, people live much longer and healthier. Good development. My father enjoyed his retirement for 28 years rather than 3, not in the least thanks to strong rule enforcement by my mother.lol Like throwing in the garbage four hand-rolled cigars of $20 each, I had bought in Havana-Cuba for my father. Musk is a liar and an idiot about many topics. Just look at his track record for claims about Tesla re dates and capabilities about, say, FSD, which are all COMPLETE nonsense, year after year. Or him being muzzled by the hapless SEC for being such a liar.
Although there is a trend toward older people not liking newer tech, there are certainly plenty of folks in their 60’s and 70’s who still fool around a lot with tech. and keep up with it to the extent they need to, to deal with what they want for their own tech needs, maintaining their tech. etc. With some companies which provide online maintenance manuals like Dell, Youtube videos, etc. it’s not difficult — it just takes a bit of effort.
And buying used from reliable and reputable refurbashers saves a TON of money vs. buying new, even if if the used computers have a lower net lifespan. All it takes is good data backups, which are increasingly easy with better drive, drive cloners, etc.
So yes, once an old person is senile and in a nursing home, they’re done. But a LOT of old people can live alone and function OK with a modern first world society with technology, medical care, delivery, etc. until in their 90’s, and purchase the bit of help they need. And in a decade or three, geofenced self driving cars will likely be able to take older people living in cities to and from places they need to go in the city once they shouldn’t drive themselves cheaper and more conveniently than taxis were.
Given what’s happening, AGW impacts are likely to be a far bigger issue than “old people don’t like tech” by 2050, much less beyond.
