Rapid population growth: to worry or not to worry?

Public Policy

From an early age, the issue of rapid growth in population has greatly intrigued me. Contrary to popular opinion, I do not think the planet is heading towards destruction because of over-population.

The fear related to over-population is nothing new, it dates back to the eighteenth century. In Robert Malthus’ essay The Principle of Population, he talks about how if the population continues to grow at the rate that it did in 1900, the world would be poverty stricken due to the outsourcing of food. Contrary to his predictions, living standards improved in the twentieth century.

Malthus’ prediction was based on the assumption that population multiplies geometrically, and food arithmetically. In arithmetic, the quantity increases with the specific and common difference in the condition, as opposed to the geometric term in which it soars exponentially. However, he did not witness the Industrial Revolution, which made agriculture work accessible and increased food resources.

In the eighteenth century, the population grew from 600 million to 1 billion. From 1900 to 2000 the population, almost tripled in number, increasing from 1.6 billion to 6 billion. According to recent reports, the present population is around 7.6 billion.

According to the UN, the world population will culminate at 11.3 billion by the year 2060. However, as Malthus’ predictions proved to be incorrect in the past, this does not have to be a catastrophic scenario.

Certainly, our planet is capable of accommodating and sustaining a large number of people. We live in a world where technology has worked miracles. Things which would have been beyond the wildest imagination of people from the past exist as the norm today. For example twenty years ago, who could have imagined how easy it would be to talk to people who lived on the other side of the world. Thus, one can hope technology can be used to sustain mass resources.

Contrary to popular opinion, I do not think the planet is heading towards destruction because of overpopulation. The fear related to overpopulation is nothing new it dates back to the 18th century

Food scarcity can be addressed through vertical farming and Genetically Modified Food Organisms (GMO). GMO is a process where genes from the DNA of one species is drawn out and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or creature. Production of food in vertically stacked layers is vertical farming which is also an effective method to increase food output. These methods can be used to sustain an exponential increase in population as well.

Furthermore, nuclear fusion and renewable energy resources can be used as substitutes for fuel or petroleum oil.

More population means more scientists, doctors, engineers, economists, and labourers. Humans are the most integral tool a country possesses. Humans run the economic cycle.

As is said in the Holy Quran, “And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision, and He knows its place of dwelling and place of storage. All is in a clear register (11:6)”. In Islam consumption of contraceptives is prohibited, the Quran stipulates, “You shall not kill your children due to fear of poverty. We provide for them, as well as for you. Killing them is a gross offense (17:13).”

Failing governments view over population as disastrous, since they have been unable to equip the growing population with suitable skills. China an economic giant has the largest population in the world, if overpopulation was such a crisis then how did they achieve such success?

Yes, problems exist in this world however; these snags are not due to over population. Problems arise when governments fail to fulfill the requirements of the populations, and they can only be solved if they are tackled head on. The need of the hour is to be creative about how we use our resources. In my opinion, population control is not a viable solution.

Junk article. We have torn apart the issues of overpopulation and carrying capacity overshoot on this blog for years now. It is clear that overpopulation is in the top 3 threats to mankind along with overconsumption and the resulting knock on effect of climate disruption. Science is firmly behind this view.

A case study of denial using 3rd Century religious text as confirmation. Gaia spits on your rationalizing a positive tone for a 6th Mass Extinction. Most will not accept that they are responsible for the acidifying oceans, the destruction of insect populations, or the herniated Jet Stream. BAU demands that the narrative not change, that growth in all of its various manifestations is sacrosanct as well as enforced. Overshoot leads to rebalancing, a tenant that can be argued but not discounted.

“Malthus’ prediction was based on the assumption that population multiplies geometrically, and food arithmetically.” ROFLMFAO! Only a very ignorant fool could right something like this. Malthus argued that population would grow exponentially and food production would grow linearly. This fuck must not even know what geometry and arithmetic are! Skip this! Reading shit like this is bad for you!

The last law of nature says: that any creature that despoils and outbreeds its natural habitat will be culled to bring its numbers under control and restore a stable environment.

But we humans like to think we are above the laws of Nature and can circumvent them. Well guess what Nature bats last

The Economy’s Not Booming. Predatory Capitalism’s Eating Itself

Quick — what’s the one thing that, funnily enough, Trump and his fiercest critics unwittingly agree on? “The economy’s booming!!” You hear it a dozen times a day. But is it? Why, then, do those very critics sometimes wonder, frowning and stroking their chins: “Wait, why aren’t wages rising? Why aren’t people’s savings and incomes and lives improving?” Now, a sensible person would at this point conclude that their theories were wrong. A reasonable one might even ask — “how can the economy really be ‘growing’ when life expectancy is falling? Isn’t that, well…absurd?” But wise men are not usually sensible people — they usually conclude that reality, not their theories, is what must be wrong. Therefore: “the economy’s booming!! High-five me, Larry!!”

The economy’s not booming. Capitalism’s eating itself. What happens when capitalism eats itself? Fascism does. With a heaping side order of authoritarianism, kleptocracy, theocracy, and all the other ills known to humankind. Do I exaggerate? Mom!! Umair was mean to me again!! Calm down, Tucker. You be the judge, and I’ll tell the story.

We white are the superior race, bow to us before we start exterminate shit skin race.

Remember, white kill almost all the Jews and Native American. We can do the same thing to Arab and Black by stopping technologies sharing

  10. DMyers on Thu, 30th Aug 2018 6:41 pm

Fascism is not the by-product of self-eaten Capitalism. Rather, Fascism is the entity that does the eating. We cannot study the by-products of Capitalism without first having a truly Capitalistic system to observe. The U.S. does not quality in this regard, as it is an amalgam of Capitalism, Fascism, Socialism, and Mob-ism.

    Really?
That is precisely what it was in 1930.

I used to worry a lot. And I mean a LOT. Now I don’t worry at all about anything. Whatever will be will be. The turning point for me was when my wife took a Reiki course she got as a gift and I happened to read a printout on her desk that contained the five Reiki principles. One of the principles is “Just for today, I will not worry”. Now, I don’t give a fuck about Reiki, but I do like its five principles. I made a copy of that printout and taped it in front of my toilet and every time I take a dump I read them. They’ve changed my life.

  16. makati1 on Thu, 30th Aug 2018 10:28 pm

“Whatever will be will be.” I learned that a long time ago. You can rarely affect anything outside of your own self, and even then, your body and mind is subject to biology and genetics. All we can do is try to look ahead and prepare for what we believe is coming, to the best of our resources and ability.

The old joke: “How do you make god laugh? Answer: You tell him your plans” rings true in so many ways. All you can do is try.

I figured out the other day the solution to Bentham’s “the greatest good for the greatest number”. The solution is extinction. The greatest number of humans is the potential humans to be born. Since we all fear death, but once born must die, the greatest good for all potential humans is extinction. Lucky for us we are working hard on achieving that. Helps me sleep at night knowing that human suffering will soon no longer exist

It is only eighty million more each year.

In the words of Alfred E. Trump: “What, me worry?

  19. Rick Bronson on Fri, 31st Aug 2018 7:12 pm

This writer must be a fanatic. Many countries are trying to restrict population growth by encouraging family planning. After all Saudi Arabia itself has started despite making billions from oil. The 30 million population of that country is so much to bear and that’s why government has increased the price of Gasoline(Petrol)/Diesel and is encouraging them to work in office instead of in the bed.

Definitely many countries which have lesser resources cannot afford to let their population grow exponentially. Of late, woman are becoming more educated and are going to work and have lesser children so that they can have better lifestyle.

My Arab neighbors are saying that their children will get much better future in USA than in the middle east where many end up as jihadis, zealots.

    Q. What’s the reason for immigration of people from developing world to developed world?
    A. The swiss banking culture encourages the politicians in developing world to loot the funds and invest in swiss bank accounts and this money goes into the economies of developed world as 0% interst loans which brings affluence to its people. On the other hand, it impoverishes the people in developing world. Naturally the people migrate to the developed world. At the same time, the people of developed world want to enjoy their life to the fullest and embrace drug culture, gay culture, SINK (Single income no kid), DINK (Double income no kid) and this leaves a labor shortage which is filled by the immigrant labor.

Whether this will change the demographics, yes it will.

Once again, we doomsters are faced with the failed predictions of the premier doomsters, such as Malthus, Ehrlich, and Duncan. It hasn’t happened yet, so it never will. That is the retort.

A man is falling from an airplane. Halfway down, he happens to think to himself, “…so far, everything seems okay….” If that metaphor fits, then worry. If it doesn’t fit, then don’t worry.

I am inclined to worry, but the only way to understand population is as a natural phenomenon. It is neither a scientific understanding, nor a scientific project. It happens by its own rules in its own time. It takes care of itself.

We have built a civilization that relies on population growth. We have built a civilization that is vulnerable to an overgrown population. That is the dilemma.

One secret that you don’t hear often: is that chemist don’t believe in evolution. This is what this video above is saying.

Once electricity in the Western world countries like Canada, France go down the human specie will lose all kind knowledge like the one in the video above. This will bring the human race back to hunter and gather and we human will have to restart from the beginning.

This is why I am favor of giving up monetary trade system for an energy trade system (Joule)

    I can dream.

“The virus is human-made and tested on black skinned people in Africa in order to find vaccines against it for military defense purposes and to depopulate the African continent….

If Ebola came from laboratories of the US Army then; what is the connection of the presence of the US Army, the World Health Organization WHO and the Centers for Disease Control CDC in Ebola facilities in the Philippines in the sixties and seventies?…

No doubt the US government is highly invested in Ebola for both potential profits developing a vaccine as well as for a potential solution as a convenient bio-warfare global population-killer.”
