Even though India receives solar energy equivalent to over 5000 kWh per year, it was able to tap only 852 megawatts due to the high initial cost of the energy system, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.
Minister of State for Non Conventional Energy Sources Vilas Muttemwar said that the country receives solar energy far more than its total requirement, but however, so far about 12.8 lakh solar photovoltaic systems aggregating to 82 megawatt capacity have been installed due to high unit cost of electricity from solar photovoltaic cells.
