Recent sightings of Peak Oil sticker on gas pumps in Florida, North Carolina, Kentucky, California, and Georgia.
Recently at a filling station in North Carolina, USA, I encountered a label proclaiming peak oil on the gas pump and on all the pumps at the
station. Although the phrase “peak oil” was not used specifically,
there was a bell curve graphic along with the words “World Oil: Half
gone, half left… make plans for your future.” The final text was
“peakoil.net.”
I have since discovered the following story and directions regarding the stickers:
Interested in communicating Peak Oil?
“Tom Joad” a like minded individual created Peak Oil stickers for use
on gas station pumps. He made them to communicate the immediacy of
Peak Oil, and his hope is that they accomplish this through suversive
“official-ness.” Here’s the stategy, after visiting the APSO webpage
(link this to peakoil.net), downloading the graphic (news blurb
entitled “ASPO sticker in USA” and sticker download located about a
third way down the home page), copy/pasting the graphic so there’s 30
per page, and printing on standard mailing labels (30 per page), pass
the word: visit gas stations- easiest is after closing- and sticker
the pumps. Here’s the trick: keep them straight, and place in the
same place on all the pumps on both sides. For example, place them
just above the price/amt counter. By keeping them straight and
uniform on all the pumps at a given station, people think the stickers
are legitimite. The attendents think: “Hm? Why did the company put
those on there?” And the distributers think: “Hm? I wonder why the
attendents/station owners put those on there?” In Tom’s home town,
stickers have remained on the pumps for five months and counting. If
you attempt during daylight when the station is open, Tom suggests
walking openly to pumps and acting as if taking note of quantity of
gas pumped as data for use in “your son’s” statistics project. As you
fake take notes, sticker the pump, as you “take notes.” This can work
in plain sight of custormers- and even minimum wage station
attendents.
Tell the people that need to know- at the consumer source: the gas station.
A message from Tom:
I hope that the stickers can help build a foundation so that when some
of our leaders finally address Peak Oil, (like Rep. Bartlett of MD is
currently doing) they won’t appear crazy. People will think, “Oh
yeah, I saw something about that at the gas station. Must be true.”
