The transition to 100% renewable energy raises some profound questions for the future of our food system.
While its slice of the overall energy pie may seem relatively low, the modern American food system is figuratively awash in fossil fuels. On average, roughly 12 calories of (mostly fossil fuel) energy go into producing just one calorie of the food that we consume. The use of fossil fuels in every phase of the food system—from fertilization, treatment, and harvesting to manufacturing, packaging, distribution, and preparation—has utterly transformed what we eat, how we eat, where we eat, and how our food is grown.
Join Michael Bomford of the Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems program of Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Tom Philpott of Mother Jones for a rich, thought-provoking conversation about what the future of food might look like in a 100% renewable energy future. Hosted by Asher Miller from Post Carbon Institute.

Really? How much does solar provide in the total pie? Very little and let me point out those solar panels are manufactured by the fossil fuel infrastructure, without which no alternatives would be made.
Also solar panels have a life span and need to be replaced and maintained.
Its a loser….
Ivanpah Solar Plant May Be Forced to Shut Down – WSJ
Power from the two Ivanpah units that serve PG&E last year fetched about $200 a megawatt-hour on average during summer months, and about $135 a megawatt-hour on average the rest of the year, according to sales data from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
That compares to an average price of $57 a megawatt-hour for solar power sold under contracts signed in 2015, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Power from natural-gas plants went for $35 a megawatt-hour on average in California’s wholesale market last year, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of data compiled by the Energy Department.

Spain has blown tens of billions subsidizing a similar disaster … again one of the reasons is that the costs to clean the panels has driven the price of electricity through the roof http://www.forbes.com/sites/christophercoats/2015/06/29/can-it-get-worse-for-spains-solar-policy-it-just-did/#51b7f4a63573
Of course, Greenies will continue to harp the BS….better get a cloths line and hang out to dry.
ghung on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 10:53 am
Ignoring Dustin Hoffman since he’s a gridweenie with no Plan B and perfectly fine with his foul 19th century energy sources. Also, Ivanpah is an early-generation large-scale solar thermal plant, as doomed to have problems as early nuke plants. At least it won’t cost a $trillion to decommission. Anyway, I won’t be paying for either, excepting taxes and a trashed environment, and I don’t expect other folks to pay for my fuckups.
Easy to spot the sociopaths, utterly reliant upon dying paradigms. Smell the fear….

Keep you head up your hole gunghoe
What a fool..ignore….
Davy on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 11:16 am
DH, you can’t compare to a pimple on Ghung’s ass. I don’t often get involved with petty comment battles but I will this time. Ghung has given me numerous leads and help. His comments are accurate and to the point. His comments are higher value comments that make a difference instead of many that are blame, complain, and seek self-advancement through conflict. Buttwipe, try being less confrontational and more adapted in a humility of not being the smartest on the board with a great deal to learn.
Dustin Hoffman on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 11:22 am
Listen you…I don’t give a rats butt what you opinion is of ANYTHING. I already TOLD you NOT to address me in any manner…good old boy…
You all have a circle jerk clicke here and its all fluff BS.
Go ahead make my day…prove solar panels will save YOU…
Sound of crickets
Now all we need is JuanO to jump in and throw his two pesos in the ring…
What a friggin circus…sad
PracticalMaina on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 11:23 am
Ghung, absolutely, but instead of a radioactive trash pile, you have usable components, if they don’t just continue to operate, its already payed for, so why wouldn’t they, you need a dozen or 2 employees to wash mirrors and keep an eye on stuff.. minimal compared to the expenditure for any nuclear of fossil fuel power.
A lot of Spains issues are because of Goldman Sachs and bad investment, not in backing the wrong tech. The largest solar thermal co in the world is Spanish, and they are in trouble but only because wall street bankrupted the country and ended the subsidies needed to jump-start this massive transition.
I have also been hearing about utility’s continuing to jack up the connection charge to try to keep raking in huge profits even with homeowner solar taking their piece.
ghung on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 11:25 am
Smell the fear,,, and anger. His hollow society is slowly falling apart and nothing can stop it.
“All the King’s Hoffmans…….”
PracticalMaina on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 11:26 am
I like solar thermal a lot, back in the day before the price of pv started dropping like a rock I thought it was going to be the main viable solution. While PV has caught up and surpassed in many areas, you have to love being able to store molten salt and draw power for 6 hours or so after the sun goes away, no big lithium ions or hydro-generators needed.
Davy on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 11:28 am
DH, not that big of a deal unless you make it a big deal. Making it a big deal means you realize it is true.
ghung on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 11:37 am
I like solar thermal, and all the nice long hot showers it provides. I like solar PV electric, and all the clean, cold spring water it pumps to the tank on the ridge. I like passive solar energy as sunlight warms the house on cold, clear winter days, and heats the greenhouse so I can grow food almost year ’round. All of these simple, robust, long-lasting technologies belie the idea that one needs complex, centralised, vulnerable, expensive, environmentally-inappropriate technology to live well.
Dustin Hoffman on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 12:16 pm
Wavey Davey….are you stupid or just like breing annoying as part of your acting out. Dont you got something better to do…like hoe the rows of your survival garden?
Just because you say what you did does not make it so…so blow!
Man, can’t believe the a holes that post here…
Dustin Hoffman on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 1:01 pm
Hung hoe better run down to the Salvation army for a free meal and some free cloths, and clean bed to sleep to rid of those dark circles.
You like solar PV electric…long lasting you say?
Good luck with that….
ghung on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 1:29 pm
“…long lasting you say? Good luck with that….”
Don’t need luck. I proved it myself. The first panels I deployed have been in constant use since October, 1994 and are still going strong. I’ve seen houses that didn’t last that long, generally with assholes like you living in them. How many cars that get used every day last that long and still perform as well as the day they were manufactured, with ZERO maintenance excepting an occasional washdown? I could go on, but am perfectly fine to watch you dig your idiot hole deeper and deeper. Enjoy paying your bills, especially when your financial world collapses.
OH, Yeah, when TSHTF, make sure you don’t show up anywhere near my place. The lights will be on, but the welcome sign for useless assholes won’t be out.

Why are you so angry Dustin Hoffman, you sound like fast-eddy-says-Scott-Nearing-is-a-fraud! You’re even mentioning rats!!!
JuanP on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 2:52 pm
DH, You are the stupidest, most ignorant, most arrogant, motherfucking, fathersucking asshole I have ever met on this forum. You are obviously clinically insane! You have managed to alienate almost everyone here in just a couple of days. It must really, really suck to be you! You are frigging unbelievable, fucktard!
JuanP on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 3:04 pm
DH, You are insulting people who have designed and built their own homes, water systems, energy systems, and grow their own food. This people are also armed and trained to use their weapons, some of them have military training.
It is OK to disagree on politics or religion where our beliefs are a matter of personal opinion, but denying the knowledge of people like Davy and Ghung who are better preppers than you could ever possibly hope to be just proves how stupid, ignorant, and insane.
If you want to stay here and be respected you’d better change your attitude because if you keep behaving like a spoiled brat, you are in for some serious punishment. You are out of your league, fool! You’d better move to the kiddies pool!

I will have to weigh in here because I too cannot stomach DH, bad mouthing Davy and Ghung who are have the track record and credibility in prepping most could only dream of. Also, yes our circle jerk is tight knit cause we vet newbies and you DH, do not pass the smell test. You are a s??? thrower who has not made any remark to my knowledge worth reading. So, I will oblige you and leave you alone as you are not worth my attention.
JuanP on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 3:52 pm
Jose, I guess you are one of our regular idiots, probably our top idiot, DH, using a different alias because you are a coward on top of an arrogant, ignorant idiot. Please keep up your moronic comments that prove what a fucktard you are. I love this crap! And if you think that I am angered or offended in any way by your stupidity you just down understand how little smart people care about what fools like you think, moron. I LOVE this shit. I have been laughing and smiling all day thanks to you fools! LOL! Please write another stupid, obnoxious comment so I can laugh some more!
And I am not surprised that you can’t understand your own language because you are a retard and you can’t even write as well as I can in your own frigging language inspite of the fact that it is only one of the five languages I am fluent on.
onlooker on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 4:02 pm
Oh and also Jose, you will find Juan can dish out more that you can probably handle. So if you have something intelligent to say, say it. Otherwise you will be singled out as the idiot fool you are, that is how we keep this board worthwhile , dont you know that.
Jose Jones on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 4:46 pm

Dustin Hoffman on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 5:09 pm
Mister Jones, thank you for showing the true colors of the core group here.
I was immediately jumped on by Davy after my first comment post and he essentially scolded me in regard to posting “intelligent” contributions.
Never mind, other than the BW Hill group, every one last of them NEVER had an original intelligent thought pass through their two ears. All they do is plagiarize by posting what they trolled on the web and repeat it here. Like they are something special.
Again, I’ve had enough. These guys will just continue until the web shuts down.
So, Davy you probably have a couple of more years left to stroke it and pretend to be somebody among your buddies.

While everyone wants to get in a pissing match, perhaps we should consider the possibility that food production will peak before oil peaks
JuanP on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 5:47 pm
DH and JJ are probably the same asshole who suffers from a multiple personality disorder and is talking to himself and answering back now. I couldn’t make this shit up! I already told you that I am not stupid enough to click on any links you post here, retard. But, by all means keep wasting your time and posting links and comments here to keep me entertained through the Summer. Keep talking to yourself DHJJ; you are as stupid and insane as they come, and I am having a blast reading your crazy shit. When did you stop taking your meds? LOL!
JuanP on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 5:52 pm
DHJJ, If your goal is to upset me, you are failing miserably. I am having a lot of fun reading your insane posts and watching you talk to yourself. You are one batshit crazy fathersucker if I ever met one! LOL! I am on my way to the beach for a swim, but please post some more stupid comments for me to enjoy when I come back later on tonight. You are the funniest retard we’ve had here in a while!
GregT on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 6:09 pm
Dustin Hoffman –“Again, I’ve had enough.”
Good. If you have nothing considerate or intelligent to add the conversation, go play your childish games somewhere else.
JuanP on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 6:19 pm
Sidzepp, Thanks for that link. I have read one of the articles quoted in it and will save it to try and read the others later.
There is no doubt that pests are extending their geographical area. I know that Root Knot Nematodes have been migrating both North and South from the tropics. They are the #1 agricultural pest in Florida by value of crop losts and impossible to erradicate by organic means.
JuanP on Thu, 14th Jul 2016 6:23 pm
Greg, Don’t get your hopes up. This fool is already using multiple aliases, so who knows what he will do. He is obviously insane! I admit that I am having fun picking on him. It feeds my psychopathic, sociopathic, and antisocial side, which is good for everyone else that I have to interact with. I intend to use him as a punching bag for as long as he keeps behaving like an idiot.
