Radioactive Material Stolen In Iraq Raises Security Fears

Radioactive Material Stolen In Iraq Raises Security Fears thumbnail

Iraq is searching for “highly dangerous” radioactive material stolen last year, according to an environment ministry document and seven security, environmental and provincial officials who fear it could be used as a weapon if acquired by Islamic State.

The material, stored in a protective case the size of a laptop computer, went missing in November from a storage facility near the southern city of Basra belonging to U.S. oilfield services company Weatherford WFT.N, the document seen by Reuters showed and officials confirmed.

A spokesman for Iraq’s environment ministry said he could not discuss the issue, citing national security concerns.

Careful now Speed racer – you are balacing on a knife edge begging for a kidnapping to a secret prison without any trial(s) or just a drone missile in the head – that is – if you live in the U.S.. – And your cats life is similarly being risked.

Best case is that you will be accused of providing support for terrorist felines – probably as well as training. IOW: You are al-queda leadership.

Do remember: – A computer has more sense of fun than the bureaucrats and their henchmen.

And why exactly does an oilfield service company need to store highly radiactive material in their storage facility??

They don’t talk much about the burn pits in Iraq because some of them were used to dispose of WMDs, including mustard gas, and its not PC to ever discuss WMDs in Iraq.

    http://burnpit.us/2014/10/must-read-nyt-chemical-weapons-more-prevalent-iraq-we-were-told

In fact, I’m surprised to see this story about IS stealing nuclear material that can be used to make WMDs. I guess nobody cares about WMDs anymore, so its OK for IS to get them.

    Cheers!

The material, which uses gamma rays to test flaws in materials used for oil and gas pipelines in a process called industrial gamma radiography, is owned by Istanbul-based SGS Turkey, according to the document and officials. [article]

haha even Trump knows Bush and Co. lied about WMD in Iraq. And even it their was is that a reason to invade them. Just lets take a deep breadth and put some reason into these conversations.

Do you sheeple ever read the NY Times? If not, then you should read their article about the cancers and other diseases affecting our soldiers who were exposed to the dangerous chemicals that were incinerated in the burn pits of Iraq. You can access the NY Time story on this topic by clicking the link I provided above. It goes first to a summary of the NY Times story at the website “BURNPIT” which focusses on the Iraqi burn pits, and from there you can click on to the original story in the NY Times, if you are a registered with them..

Here’s an excerpt from the NY Times story on the burn pits:

From 2004 to 2011, American and American-trained Iraqi troops repeatedly encountered, and on at least six occasions were wounded by, chemical weapons remaining from years earlier in Saddam Hussein’s rule.
In all, American troops secretly reported finding roughly 5,000 chemical warheads, shells or aviation bombs, according to interviews with dozens of participants, Iraqi and American officials, and heavily redacted intelligence documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.
Congress, too, was only partly informed, while troops and officers were instructed to be silent or give deceptive accounts of what they had found. “ ’Nothing of significance’ is what I was ordered to say,” said Jarrod Lampier, a recently retired Army major who was present for the largest chemical weapons discovery of the war: more than 2,400 nerve-agent rockets unearthed in 2006 at a former Republican Guard compound.
Jarrod L. Taylor, a former Army sergeant on hand for the destruction of mustard shells that burned two soldiers in his infantry company, joked of “wounds that never happened” from “that stuff that didn’t exist.” The public, he said, was misled for a decade. “I love it when I hear, ‘Oh there weren’t any chemical weapons in Iraq,’ ” he said. “There were plenty.”

    Cheers!

  13. Plantagenet on Thu, 18th Feb 2016 4:50 pm

I love the way Onlooker is so gullible he believes what Donald Trump says! Wow, man.

    Hahahahahahahah!

Apeman, as usual, writes a mean little post, showing once again he is a mean little person.

Twocats is at least sensible in his post, but apparently he didn’t notice this whole thread about IS trying †o get nuclear material in Iraq to make WMDS. Good heavens, twocats, the article has the acronym WMD in it—-that can’t be right since you KNOW there are no WMDs in Iraq, right?

Meanwhile, I have to express my support for the US troops who were actually there and who actually suffered injuries from the chemical weapons, and the NY Times reporters who talked to the US troops and who uncovered this story using internal government documents obtained through FOIA.

    CHEERS!

  14. onlooker on Thu, 18th Feb 2016 4:54 pm

Yes their might of been chemical weapons in Iraq, but guess what we have also left a trail of dangerous munitions in Iraq, like left over radioactive munitions not to mention our use or our surrogates use of our own horrid weapons that burn horribly not to mention the devastation we have inflicted upon that country. So if you want to talk about legacies there are some for you. Oh and it is precisely the sheeple who read and believe the NYT.

  15. Plantagenet on Thu, 18th Feb 2016 5:12 pm

    @onlooker:

You say you get your information from Donald Trump, who says he gets his information from “the shows” on TV.

    Gosh…why aren’t I impressed?

    —–

OK, more seriously, if you admit there were some WMDs in Iraq as our troops say, then why repeat Trump’s lies that there were no WMDs? There is no way around the fact that Hussein used chemical WMDs against Iran and then against the Kurds in Iraq. Our troops say they found leftover WMDs from the arsenal Hussein had when he used them against Iran. That seems reasonable to me.

    Have a great day—CHEERS!

  16. Apneaman on Thu, 18th Feb 2016 5:13 pm

yes, planty we are well aware you are totally informed by the NYT and FOXnews and the other mouthpieces of empire. You’re constant parroting of their talking points makes that clear. NYT says Glut. Planty says glut. So you read things and repeat them. Am I supposed to be impressed at your repeating skills? You are a mindless fucking Merican retard who simply goes around repeating shit you don’t even understand. Planty, just because Trump is full of shit does not mean everything he barfs up is a lie. One of the reasons he is so popular is because he speaks some truths about the lies and deceit of the establishment. Course only your fellow merican tards believe he can “make America great again”

Regan was claiming he was going to make merica great again in 1980. 36 years later is a long time to not be great. The less great you get the more certain you people are of your greatness. The only way I would believe anything any american said is if they proved themselves to be intelligent and aware. Something you have yet to demonstrate.

You think I’m mean? You are ugly. The ugly self righteous merican arguing about your god given right to go into other people’s countries on bullshit pretexts and slaughter hundreds of thousands of innocent women and children. Nothing is uglier and meaner than you murdering fucks and you deserve every bit of suffering thats coming. France and Great Britain have hundreds of WMD’s. Go invade them. Y’all mericans (90%) are such great patriots planty. As long as love of ones country does not include the land or the air or the water or the poor. Patriots my ass.

EPA Releases List of Communities with Dangerous Air Pollution

“Sulfur dioxide pollution, which largely comes from coal plants, is a very dangerous threat to the health of our families and communities. It’s so much of a danger that even short-term exposure for as little as five minutes is associated with breathing problems like asthma attacks, particularly among vulnerable populations like the elderly and asthmatics. On top of that, the medical community has established connections between chronic exposure and even more serious conditions, such as aggravation of cardiac conditions, hospitalization, and even premature death.”

“Parents shouldn’t have to worry about their kids when they are playing in their backyards or their schoolyards, but in many communities across the U.S., that’s frequently the case because of dangerous air pollution coming from nearby coal plants.”

And the biggest WMD? It’s going off in the Arctic right now.

No Winter For the Arctic in 2016 — NASA Marks Hottest January Ever Recorded

“The Scientists are floored and we should be too. The global heat and especially the extremely high temperature departures we’ve seen in the Arctic over the past month are flat-out unprecedented. It’s freakish-strange. And what it looks like, to this particular observer, is that the seasonality of our world is changing. What we’re witnessing, at this time — it looks like the beginning of the end for Winter as we know it.

Hottest January on Record — But the Arctic is Just Outlandish

Anyone who observes the Arctic — from scientists, to environmentalists, to emerging threats specialists, to weather and climate enthusiasts, to just regular people unsettled by the rapidly unraveling state of our global climate system — should be very, very concerned. The human greenhouse gas emission — now pushing CO2 levels to above 405 parts per million and adding in a host of additional heat trapping gasses — appears to be rapidly forcing our world to warm. To warm most swiftly in one of the absolute worst places imaginable — the Arctic.

Not only was January of 2016 the hottest such month ever recorded in the 136 year NASA global climate record. Not only did January show the highest temperature departure from average for a single month — at +1.13 C above NASA’s 20th Century base-line and about +1.38 C above 1880s averages (just 0.12 C shy of the dangerous 1.5 C mark). But what we observed in the global distribution of those record hot temperatures was both odd and disturbing.”

“Why is this all so ominous?

It would be bad if it were only a case that warmth in the Arctic just resulted in the ever-more-rapid melting of glaciers — forcing seas to rise by centimeters, inches and feet. It would be rather bad if polar warming amplified as white ice on land and over the ocean withdrew — turning a heat-reflecting surface into dark blue, green, and brown heat-absorbing feature. It would be pretty amazingly bad if such heat also resulted in permafrost thaw — again worsening human-forced warming by unlocking up to 1,300 billion tons of carbon and eventually transferring about half of that into our atmosphere. And it would be rather bad if all that extra heat in the Arctic started to meddle with the Northern Hemisphere’s weather — by altering the flow of the Jet Stream. By resulting in very persistent drought-producing ridges and storm-producing troughs.”

“Sadly, these events are no longer just hypothetical. The sea ice is retreating. The permafrost is thawing. The glaciers are melting. And the flow of the Jet Stream appears to be weakening.”

Ok plant, I’ll play your stupid little game. I followed the leads and the fact that no one, and I mean almost no one picked up the WMD story you are talking about is this:

    http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/the-right-finds-new-ways-flub-wmd-story

what this article shows isn’t that Bush/Cheney weren’t lying about WMD’s – THEY WERE. It shows that the US doesn’t provide adequate protection and training to its soldiers tasked with cleaning up EXPIRED USELESS DECADES OLD wmds. You see those key descriptors? You see how those munitions could only hurt people stupid enough to move them around and try to burn them or whatever?

So the REUTERS ARTICLE (which talks about NUCLEAR MATERIAL ORIGINATING FROM TURKEY – you fucking idiot) that this thread is BASED on isn’t even about your stupid BURN PITS, and the BURN PITS angle you posit is a dead end.

I’m agree that apneaman’s posts here are off topic, but YOU clearly do not understand the VERY VERY limited shelf life of CHEMICAL WMDS and the fact that EVEN IF IRAQ had chemical weapons, what were they going to do!!?? Launch them with ICBMs THEY DIDN’T HAVE half way around the world to put a few hundred people in the hospital and maybe kill a dozen or so??

    http://thediplomat.com/2013/08/chemical-weapons-are-not-a-wmd/

    There.
