Pentagon to increase number of US troops in Iraq

Pentagon to increase number of US troops in Iraq thumbnail
The US plans to increase the number of troops in Iraq as it seeks to “accelerate” its campaign to “crush” Islamic State in the region, the Pentagon chief said.

Ash Carter met with his French partner seeking ways to bring Arab states “in the game,” too.

Aside from his bilateral meeting with his counterpart and “good friend,” French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, the US Defense Secretary Carter sat down for the first with seven major members of the anti-Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) coalition. The “face-to-face meeting” included Britain, Germany, Italy, Australia and the Netherlands, all trying to figure out in what ways they could boost their fight against Islamic militants.

“The object of today is to satisfy ourselves that the balance of the campaign is right…and that we can now capitalize on the setbacks Daesh has suffered in Iraq and move on to tighten the noose around the head of the snake in Syria in Raqqa,” British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon told reporters.

The coalition’s major goal right now is to target and destroy IS headquarters in Iraq and Syria while also combating their supporters worldwide, “everywhere its metastasis have spread around the world,” the Pentagon stressed.

“We’re doing this by providing a plan, clear leadership and the power of a global coalition wielding a suite of capabilities [that include] airstrikes, special forces, cyber tools, intelligence, equipment, mobility and logistics, and training, advice and assistance,” Carter said.

The counter-IS campaign is a running theme of Carter’s trip to Paris and Davos, Switzerland, where he is attending the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting, using it as an “opportunity to talk to some of those same leaders about the same topics.”

Speaking to reporters while en route to Paris, Carter stressed that the military campaign is also about “protecting the American homeland.”

He also laid out some of the Pentagon’s plans regarding the coalition and its strategy.

Citing the recent success in taking the city of Ramadi back from the Islamic militants, Carter said he “expects” the number of additional US advisers in Iraq to increase, as well as “the variety of the training they’re giving.”

“So for example, as territory is retaken from IS, as moving up and ultimately including Mosul, there are going to need to be not just ground forces that can seize territory, but police forces that can keep security,” the Defense Secretary said.

Carter did not give an exact number, but said the number of US personnel is going “to increase greatly as the momentum of the effort increases.”

He stressed that the reinforcement would involve not only the US, but also its coalition partners. In this regard, Carter said that one of his goals is to bring Arab countries – “Arabs and Sunni Arabs” – into the military campaign, as they can be “an enormous contribution to this.”

“I want to hear from my counterparts over the next couple of days — how can we get them in the game. I have long said that Arabs and Sunni Arabs need to get in the game,” Carter said on Tuesday.

In February, defense ministers from 26 counter-ISIS coalition nations, plus Iraq, are going to meet in Brussels, all together for the first time, to continue discussions on how to “hasten” the defeat of jihadists.

“Every nation must come prepared to discuss further contributions to the fight,” Carter said, “and I will not hesitate to engage and challenge current and prospective members of the coalition as we go forward.”

It makes you wonder why Obama pulled US troops out of Iraq in the first place, since he’s putting more boots on the ground in Iraq again.

  2. makati1 on Sun, 24th Jan 2016 7:28 pm

What’s another trillion wasted by the obscene government called the USA? Why does a warmongering government think that a few more ‘boots on the ground’ is going to change the tide in the ME? Arrogance? Stupidity? Desperation?

Fear that the East is going to take over control of the ME appears to be the reason behind the new surge’, not any actual desire to help.

China in Iran and Saudi Arabia, Etc.

Russia in both plus Syria, etc.

NATO’s Turkey committing political and financial suicide.

    And on and on…

The US has not “won” a war in 100 years. It will not now, unless it uses nukes and then it loses anyway. The US has the most impotent, expensive military in the world. LOL

  3. Anonymous on Sun, 24th Jan 2016 7:35 pm

Hilarious(unless your Iraqi, or Syrian, in which case, sorry). The US has no desire to ‘defeat’ the USlamic state. Like mak says, the inept US military couldn’t beat ‘ISIS’ even if it actually existed and the US actually wanted to. But as an excuse to keep the area in a state of permanent low-to-medium-grade chaos and ensure the yankee never goes home? The USlamic state is worth every dollar the US ‘fed’ printed out of thin air to fund it with.

  4. Boat on Sun, 24th Jan 2016 7:42 pm

    Plant,
Iraq wanted the right to prosecute US committed crimes in Iraq court. This was the reasoning for pulling the troops. Now the US has right to prosecute alleged crimes under US law in US or military courts. I am surprised you didn’t know this.

“China is Iran’s largest trading partner, including oil and gas, along with billions of dollars in other products and services. … Tehran intends increasing ties with the “East.” He praised Beijing’s “independent” stance on global issues, saying “China has always stood by the side of the Iranian nation during hard days.”

America’s approach is “dishonest” on all geopolitical issues, he stressed. Closer Iranian Eastern ties makes it less vulnerable to US-led Western hostility.”

Das Boat, too bad the US doesn’t pass laws to protect their own people from third world living conditions. Luckily, some of those alleged “anti American” neighbours are helping them out where their government has failed them.

Canadians offer help to Flint during its drinking water crisis

Lead levels in Michigan city’s drinking water have created a public health crisis.

“People in Windsor, Ont., have donated some 50,000 bottles of water in response to a call by the city’s junior hockey team. The Windsor Spitfires launched the water drive Thursday during a game against the Flint Firebirds.
The idea came from a family that hosts one of the hockey team’s players. The team thought they’d collect some water and throw it onto the fan bus that was headed to Flint for a game on Saturday, said team spokesman David Ducharme.
“And then this thing absolutely snowballed,” Ducharme said. Now they need two tractor-trailer loads to deliver the water.”

“I want to hear from my counterparts over the next couple of days — how can we get them in the game.” I have long said that Arabs and Sunni Arabs need to get in the game,” Carter said on Tuesday.

Ah yes, Mr. Carter.  Maybe we can get one or two Arab observers to look on the battles from afar as more American soldiers are killed.  The Saudis, Kuwaitis, Qataris and other locals always make such enormous contributions when Americans are fighting their battles for them.  Clearly, Senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain, who never saw a war they didn’t like, will welcome those massive Arabesque contingents.  Maybe the latter can help by buying us some made-in-China body bags in which to ship the corpses of our men back home.

  11. rockman on Mon, 25th Jan 2016 6:34 am

I always find the word play interesting: ““I want to hear from my counterparts”…Carter said on Tuesday/ Not the Sec State, not the Sec Def and certainly not the POTUS: the talking head of the White House is going to discuss this serious subject matter. And with who: apparent his “counterparts…the administration talking heads of other ME govts. Maybe the dig up Baghdad Bob. LOL.

Yes indeed: we certainly don’t want anyone too far up the DC food chain to be embarrassed when those govts tell the US to kiss their ass.

Iraq doesn’t want foreign troops on its soil, https://www.rt.com/news/330035-no-foreign-troops-iraq/

  13. joe on Mon, 25th Jan 2016 9:43 am

Does anyone remember 04-08? Do think the US defeated al qaeda in iraq (now called isis )? Didn’t the Bush administration announce a ‘step up as we draw down’ plan, then pay the Dulaimi tribe and it’s friends to dump al qaedas as out of Iraq and let them run off into Syria. As I recall it was members of al qaeda in Iraq that gave up al Zarqawi hoping to get the heat off themselves.
America wants to go back into that bottomless pit? To defeat isis and occupy it’s territory the US will have to invade and defend al Anbar, Ninaveh, Saladin, Babil, Baghdad and Kirkuk province and now if it does it will have to add 4 governorates of syria (al raqqa, hasakia, Homs and Dier ez Zor). It also has to stop Turkey helping Isis as they turn more islamist cut off their access to the border.
Basically any idea that the US has a spare 1 million men (Rumsfeld was shocked to hear he needed 500,000 to get the job done right in Iraq in 03) to go and basically cut northern Arabia in half. It’s just blowhards thinking again they can do things which have already been shown they cannot do. Iraq was a defeat, but the US allowed Iran and Isis to fill the void it left behind. If America had not left Iraq, today nothing would be different, except the US would be fighting revolts, as the British used to do, as the Turks did before them, etc etc. Build a big wall around the entire region, and take the last man standing in as a refugee.

  14. Plantagenet on Mon, 25th Jan 2016 10:57 am

The claim that Iraq doesn’t want foreign soldiers on its soil is silly. There already are thousands of US soldiers in Iraq and Obama is sending more US soldiers to Iraq—those are the fact.

    Cheers!

  15. Plantagenet on Mon, 25th Jan 2016 12:52 pm

    @Juan

I agree with you that US policy towards Iraq isn’t very well thought and that Iraq-US relations are poor, but please don’t pretend that there aren’t US boots on the ground in Iraq—because they are there.

And please don’t pretend that the Iraq government doesn’t want the US troops there—because Obama wouldn’t being sending more US troops to the war in Iraq if Iraq didn’t sign off on it.

    CHEERS!

  16. sidzepp on Mon, 25th Jan 2016 1:16 pm

When has any of our foreign policy since WWII been well thought out? We have constantly been bombarded with propaganda about the Reds, the Viet Cong, the Chinese, the North Koreans, the Sandistas, the ISIL, the _____ fill in the blank, that are out to destroy us, so let us destroy someone first before they destroy us and our Manifest Destiny.

  17. Plantagenet on Mon, 25th Jan 2016 1:50 pm

    @sidzepp

Good point, but things are even worse now then in the past.

Consider Iraq. Bush I fights a war with Iraq—Ds vote for war. Bush doesn’t invade. Ds criticize Bush for not invading.

Bush II fights a war with Iraq. Ds vote for war. Bush II invades Iraq. Ds criticize Bush II for invading.

Obama pulls all US troops out of Iraq. Obama starts war in Syria and Iraq. Obama sends US troops back into Iraq. No vote for war is ever taken in Congress.

    ——————-

See what I mean—-there’s a total incoherent policy mess in the ME.

  18. Plantagenet on Mon, 25th Jan 2016 1:53 pm

Its bad enough when US policy flips back and forth when administrations change and a new president comes in, but with Obama you’ve got a complete flip flop in ME policy occurring within the same administration. Now THAT is a low in policy confusion!!!

    CHEERS!

My favorite Bush flip flop was when he flew in on a jet to declare Mission Accomplished. What mission and what was accomplished?
Obama declared victory in Iraq also. I am just glad McCain didn’t win or we would be in 20 other Muslim countries.
Remember Assad removal was the goal without US troops. Obama learned the hard way it ain’t gonna happen.

  28. bug on Mon, 25th Jan 2016 4:26 pm

This is all just to help the MIC,they need to profit from this and Congress then can add to military spending to help their districts. Sending troops to far away shitholes requires navy and commercial ships, which then require shipyards to service them. A win for people in shipyard towns. And the people will go “yippee, we’re #1”.

Not until thousands of isis men hiding as refugees attack europe and try to spread the jihad.
Americans may not realise, the CIA etc know, that the true goal of isis is to divide europe forever into two camps, hoping that the liberal/atheist/gynocracy will not realise or understand the true scope of tbe threat they face, and so will never coax their men to raise arms against muslims untill its too late.

  33. Apneaman on Wed, 27th Jan 2016 10:05 am

joe, why do you and others like you all the sudden care so much about Europe?

  34. JuanP on Wed, 27th Jan 2016 11:15 am

As a South American, I am very happy that the USA keeps spending its time left, troops’ mental and physical health, and its treasury fighting in Asia, Africa, and Europe. The more time and resources they waste there, the easier it will be to erradicate them from South America when the USA finally collapses in a brutal way, as it inevitably will.

Please, pretty please, won’t US officials make my day and go to war with Iran, Russia, and/or China, too. Nothing would make me happier. The USA is a nation mostly filled with ignorant, deluded fools! LOL!

My heart goes out to the few decent, sane, educated American citizens left. I can’t even imagine how painful it must be for you guys to watch your country self destruct like this. What a waste! No country in human history ever did less good in the world with so much going for it.

Too bad the anti-American extremist are taking it on the chin lately with their wishes for death to Merika and victory to the broken Brics. These extremist have been hilarious to watch. They have been quiet lately except for the most deluded. How can these extremist crow their song when it is so lousy for their Bric turds? I hate to say I told you so but I TOLD YOU SO! Your fictional agendas are duds and your dreams turds.

Davy, you are a delusional American exceptionalist one percenter fool and the board’s bully. Do even your twins listen to you when you talk anymore or do they make faces every time you open your mouth? It is only a matter of time before they realize you are a liar and a fool, just like your daughter and wife did already. My guess is they are starting to realize their father is a lunatic and a deluded fool. It is fun to watch how everybody with a brain, common sense, and an education on this board disagrees with you and you have been reduced to making friends with scum like TheeDouche, Hello, and Boat. Birds of a feather and all that!

I am proud of the people that agree with me on this board, they are the smartest, mentally healthiest, better educated bunch of freakish truth seekers I’ve ever met while you are a deluded fool living in denial about yourself, your church, your family, your friends, and your country. Everything you believe in is a lie, fool.

And the way you pretend to be this wise guy living in harmony with nature is truly pathetic. If you had ever experienced any harmony in your life, you wouldn’t be the way you are and treat others the way you do. My guess is you have always been a coward, a bully, a traitor, and a fool. The more foolish someone is the wiser they think they are, and you are a perfect example of this, moron!

You are a register fascist I am sure. I suspect your 1%er family back there would just as soon keep you in Miami because of your mental condition. Your severe depression mixed with guns and anger make you a loose cannon.

You are the type that needs to be deported on grounds of extremism prone to violence. I guess since you are a 1%er Miami real estate chump you may be under the radar screen. I hope someone is watching you and should be.

Peddling high end real estate is a poor profession especially now that it is going to hit the skids hard. Sounds like a bad combination lost livelihood with mental illness. Me thinks maybe homelessness in your future.

Juan, have you been kite boarding and fishing in the Biscane bay lately enjoying that 1% life while you still can. Oh have you been down to the DR to see your permaculture bud spuds. Or maybe have you been to any Trump fundraisers. You spouted off last month how you met him at one of your 1%er parties.

Juan, You are a prick and living a failed dream in a land you hate. What a wasted life. You are the people that America needs to discharge like a ass pimple. I bet you look like one to boot.

I may also visit Vermont and Uruguay, too, this year. You should enjoy life while you still can, too. Why do you resent my activities?
