Shelling by so-called Islamic State (IS) on an oil terminal in Libya has started fires that have spread to giant storage tanks, officials say.
The fires are reported to be raging in Sidra, on the coast between Sirte and Benghazi.
Officials said at least 10 guards had been killed since IS attacked the neighbouring ports on Monday.
Warplanes from Libya’s internationally recognised government have provided air support to help defend the area.
Libya has been split between rival militias and two competing governments since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
IS has been operating in Libya for about a year, and in December France warned that the group was aiming to seize the country’s oil wells.
Ali al-Hassi, of the Petrol Facilities Guard militia, told the BBC that five storage tanks were on fire in Sidra but none in Ras Lanouf, as earlier reported.
Each rank is thought to contain more than 400,000 barrels of oil.
Mr Hassi also said guards had recovered the bodies of 30 militants and had captured military vehicles.
On Monday, IS said it had taken control of the town of Bin Jawad, 30km (19 miles) west of Sidra on the road from its stronghold in Sirte.
The jihadists failed to take Sidra in an attack last October.
In December, Libya’s rival politicians signed a UN-brokered deal to form a unity government, but that has not yet been implemented.

The price of not bending over for the Empire. Chaos and destruction. But the boomerang has finally come back to the West. And about time!

I don’t understand what took them so long to figure out that going after the oil is ultimate goal. It is not that I like isis don’t get me wrong

“Warplanes from Libya’s internationally recognized government have provided air support to help defend the area.”
Since when do international bodies have the right to determine other peoples’ governance. So much for upholding democratic principles. Seems to be quite a bit of that going on lately, in countries that have been destabilized and plunged into war by those same said international bodies. Strange that.

The bright side: ISIL is reducing global oversupply. And to this boon was all due to a video, as Madame Clinton has informed us.

“Cushing Oklahoma might be seeing tank fires because the greedy frackers can’t stop.” And just to keep the record straight with a few FACTS: even the OK State Geologic Survey specifically states that the increased seismic activity has nothing to do with frac’ng. But the do think it may be related to injection wells. Injection wells that pump a lot more then frac fluids into the ground. Of course there is a problem with that theory: the same injection wells the THEORIZE might be causing the seismic activity aren’t new: they were in operation decades before the latest swarms and had already injected many times more fluid then has been done in the latest several years.
BTW: all the FACTS I point out below came directly from the link provide above.
Could it be a prelude to the “BIG One”? Sure: OK is right across the border from the state were the largest earth quake ever estimated in the US occurred about 150 years. A weakest in the earth they understand very little compared to the much more common west coast tremors. Just the humble opinion of a non-seismologist geologist but a 32 tremor swarm in 24 hours hints more of a regional disturbance then a local one related to water injection wells. But what else could cause the “big one”? Well’ according to one expert with the US govt: “Daniel McNamara, a USGS research geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center, is one of those experts. In a November interview with the Tulsa World, McNamara cautioned that the hazard is real for another Prague-sized quake that could strike a population center or critical infrastructure. McNamara described the number of magnitude 4s occurring in 2015 as “unheard of in any other similar-sized region on the planet that we know of.” Oklahoma’s sequences or numbers are typically associated with large earthquakes such as those in Nepal and Japan, he explained. “Now we have as many as 13 different fault zones in Oklahoma with magnitude 4s occurring on them this year alone,” McNamara told the World in November. “And so just from the behavior of the Prague sequence, any one of these looks like it could produce a 5- or 6-magnitude earthquake, so we’re very concerned about a number of these fault zones.” The state has experienced 69 earthquakes of 2.5-magnitude or greater since Oklahomans rang in the new year one week ago, according to USGS data, as of 11:15 p.m. Thursday.”
BTW according to the state geologist this latest swarm is unrelated to the earlier tremors that some THEORIZED might be related to injection wells:
“This little burst has been quite remarkable,” Boak said. “Having four magnitude 4s in one day is highly unusual. It’s up there in that northern center. So it’s quite isolated from the ones we had earlier this year and the tail end of last year.”
He also points out that OK has always been the major center of small tremors in the US…long before frac’ng and injection wells were common: “In terms of seismic release, California’s is 10 times that of Oklahoma’s, Boak said. But this activity is of note, he said. “We’re the capital of the minor league earthquakes,” Boak said. “We definitely have more of them. There’s no doubt in terms of induced seismicity, we’re the epicenter of it, now. It’s a really different relationship than most other places that have mainly natural earthquakes.”
Also those two big tremors occurred at a depth of 18,000’ Most injection wells are less the 2,000’ deep…and many shallower then 1,000’. So for decades they’ve injected water down those wells. And forsake of argument we’ll toss in frac’ng that has been popular for the last 7 years or so. And none of that activity caused any tremors until the small swarm over the last 2 years and the truly massive swam in just the last two weeks. Hmm?

I just knew that I could bring out the great oil industry apologizer. Hasn’t been around for awhile, but within minutes of his life’s work/identity being criticized he’s here like a lightning bolt. How come you never help clear things up on any other topics rockman? Why is your truth mission solely devoted to fracking and fossil fuels? Who is injecting the waste water? The video game industry? I see your truth loving fossil fuel friends in California are telling all those Porter Ranch parents whose kids noses are bleeding that it’s all in their head.

I cannot believe that Obama did not have these facilities guarded in some way…
The world is on the brink of running out of crude supply to feed the refineries… Within months (possibly weeks), major fuel pipelines around the globe will start shutting down… Libya has exported as much a 2 Million BOPD but the last time I checked it was only exporting 300K BOPD from it’s Western Export Facilities…
Now, it looks like getting Libyan exports back up & running anytime in 2016 is no longer an option…

Ap, they all know that they are not doing proper maintenance or safety practices to save money.
The lies in the petroleum business are fast approaching the level coming out of Japan about the Fukushima fiasco. Since there is no way to prove the current upswing in thyroid cancer among children exposed to the radiation, they can get away with it for a while.
Ditto quakes in fraking areas where there was no previous history of same. By the time the proof is obvious even to the deniers, the money will have been pocketed by the guilty and they will have moved on. Too bad. Hanging would be too easy for them.

Gee, that ‘ISIS’ is everywhere aren’t they? Wether its Australia, or zimbabwe, or anywhere else, you can always rely on the ‘USlamic State’ to be wherever it needs to be. And here I thought ‘ISIS’ surrounded on all sides in Syria and Iraq by the exceptional armies of Mordor, I mean america, sorry, was hard pressed just to stay alive. But no…they can attack oil facilities ..what 1000 KM away, getting past the jews, the brits, the french and everyone else in-between?
Handy….
