Why are Fossil Fuels such popular energy sources?
Fossil fuels have been an incredibly successful source of cheap, instant energy. If it was not for climate change and peak oil, they would still be our number one choice.
Fossil fuels get their name because they are literally made from fossils — dead organisms (mostly plants) that didn’t decay because they were squashed under water or mud with no oxygen.
When we burn fossil fuels today we release the solar energy that was originally captured by photosynthesis millions of years ago.
While they were alive, the energy was stored in the proteins, fats and carbohydrates that made up the organisms.
Under intense heat and pressure over the eons, these carbon-based molecules were transformed into more uniform molecules, called hydrocarbons — long chains of carbon, coated with hydrogen.
The plants that were buried deep at sea were converted to oil and gas, and those buried in swamps became coal. The only difference between the oil, gas and coal is the length of the hydrocarbon molecules that make them up.
The shortest chain hydrocarbons are gases (up to four carbon atoms long), petroleum is made of medium-length chains (seven to 12 carbons) and oils and grease are longer still (up to 20 carbons).
Coal is a bit of a different story. It’s mostly made of rings of carbon, not chains, and it’s a bit lighter on with the hydrogen coating.
Chemical bonds provide energy on demand
Fossil fuels store their energy in the chemical bonds that hold the hydrocarbon molecules together. That energy can stay trapped like that right up until the moment the hydrocarbons meet both heat and oxygen (O2).
Heat (from a match or spark) breaks the hydrocarbon and oxygen molecules apart, and then oxygen atoms react with the freed carbon and hydrogen atoms to give carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), and loads of energy as heat along the way.
That extra heat is the key to fossil fuel’s success. More heat energy is released when the new bonds form in CO2 and H2O than it took to break the original bonds in oxygen and the fuel. So once combustion starts, it’s a runaway chain reaction giving off excess heat.
We’ve used the heat directly for cooking and warming, and indirectly to boil water for steam-powered turbines for electricity. The gases given off from burning fuels have driven pistons in internal combustion engines for more than a century.
Not only can we start a fire with a single spark, we can stop it by cutting the supply of fuel, air or heat, so it’s a source of energy we can turn on and off as needed.
A controllable source of energy that has only two major downsides — finite supply and being the source of the CO2 that’s driving climate change. No wonder fossil fuels have been such a hard habit for industrialised countries to kick.

Well if someone is going to ever understand the complexity of the fossil fuel culture they do need to understand the basics, don’t they. Sadly we still have a lot of adults in this country that don’t even understand how oil is turned into gasoline or how exploration is conducted. Lack of such basic knowledge even shows up on this site much too often. And our average smarts are much higher then the general population.

Global warming/cooling cycle happened over and over before human. Glacial maximum was 23k years ago(kya) and warming. China/Taiwan/Japan was connected. By 15kyp sea started to rise and low level land began to submerge and people/pottery spread to world. By around 6kya, Sea level rose 120m/400feet and relatively flat until now. In last 4500 things like extreme high or low temperature caused many civilization failure.

CO2 level today is already way more than peaks of last half million years, but temperature is flat for past 18 years. I think 102 year sun cycle(related to Maunder minimum) peaked about 2000, currently weak 11 year peak too. If it was just from sun, temp should drop until 2020. If temp is flat then it is sign of CO2 impact.
There are many things affecting than included in past simulations. Also NEW 2015 discoveries of deep sea and desert carbon sinks were NOT accounted on simulation of past. 400 million years ago CO2 was 15 times higher. NASA revealed Antarctic ice gains. Ice melting releases CO2 too. Carbon capture is waste of energy and money unless co2 is actually used for something useful. What really needed is birth control but religion and globalist are against it since it reduced potential money.
CO2 causes hotter hemisphere in summer and cause extra evaporation. This probably create more cloud for change in weather pattern. extreme weather, and block sun for other hemisphere for extreme cold winter. This explains antarctic ice increase.
co2 is like a fertilizer that has reaches saturation and increasing it only makes small difference. Impact of slower increase CO2 is small, but extreme weather is real. Pollutions kill millions and we don’t want $500/barrel oil. We still need to use less fossil fuel.

All the world’s problems are American and because of Americans is the agenda. That is bullshit and I am fighting that daily.
These people are consumed by agendas that justify the means. They will the death of America. They hate Americans. They must hate themselves also because that is the nature of hate. Hate, resentment, and the deadly serious disposition of self-importance is rife on the internet. It is rife at all levels of society and will be the match that is dangerously waived with gasoline everywhere.
Those who think America can be destroyed and the rest of the world survive are lunatics. There is no rest of the world as we know it without America and no America without the rest of the world. America is in decline and if left to its own devises will likely withdraw especially in crisis to a less meddling posture. I can assure you of that. This is a basics of civilizations in decline throughout history. If the US is pushed into a corner and attacked from all sides we will destroy the world. The same is true for Russia and China. These three powers must be handled with kid gloves if the world does not want complete disaster.
My attitude is uncomfortable for the anti-Americans. They want me to be completely part of their agenda of absolute hatred of the US. If you have any support for America at any level or attempt to show fairness, balance, and objectivity they pounce on you and as a group. They are rabid dogs in a pack. Many of the Americans here are just like sheep that say the fence is high and they can never get to us. Then there are those with American guilt that want to wallow in self-pity and self-hate. They want to be Jesus and take on the sins of the world and turn the cheek.
I am constantly called a patriot and I am. I will die for my country. In this respect my country is my local, my family and my friends. I am not going to support the current leadership, the failed American dream, and especially American foreign policy. Yet, I am not going to be told I am completely bad and the rest of the world is good.
The anti-Americans want no prisoners. They want complete acceptance of the agenda of American hatred. They want Americans to bend over and take it. They want to say it will hurt a little at first but eventually you will like it. These folks are vicious and cruel and will the death of Americans en mass for sins America has committed. It does not matter the rest of the world has blood on their hands.
Justification of evil against evil is not right. I acknowledge war is better than a bad peace but within reason. If you are going to justify murder to fight murder you are taking the type of step that makes you just as bad as those you hate. It is a dangerous slippery slope into the abyss. FF, I have been all over MO. I have lived in St Louis, Jeff City, Hermann, and Vienna. I had a wonderful farm along the Missouri River in Warren County. I now have a farm south of Rolla. I had a 1000 acre farm in Callaway County along the MO River for a few years also. I also lived in Spain and Germany in the 80’s.

JuanP, You understand that it is the small way I can hurt the Empire. By spending my S.S. income in the Ps, I take it out of the US economy and the hands of the insane government. I pay zero taxes to the US, except state sales taxes on what I purchase when I visit there.
There are over 100,000 Americans living here and not paying US taxes on their S.S. incomes. I am sure the numbers around the world are in the millions. But we are a drop in the bucket compared to the corporations and the US elite who have stashed trillions outside of the IRS clutches.
As for the balance sheet, I paid in for ~46 years at anywhere from 6% to 15% of my income. At 3% interest per year, (the average paid for savings deposits for most of that time) I am still in the black and they owe me. I doubt the system will last long enough to pay me even that amount but I will take it until then. Have a great day!

Juan – But let’s be honest, bro: we are exceptional when it comes to our exceptionalism. And if you think the US as a whole is bad trying hanging out with more Texicans like the Rockman: they feel we’ee rather exceptional just with our country. LOL.
As we say in the Lone Star State: it ain’t bragging if it’s true. And we’re very serious about that singular star bullsh*t. LOL.

Rock, There is good and bad everywhere, including the USA, the world, Davy, you, and me! LOL!
There are very many things I like about the USA, but I completely disagree with its foreign policy. As far as Americans go, they are more spoiled than most of the people of the world on average, but that is to be expected considering the privileged circumstances of so many in the USA, myself included. I don’t consider Americans to be intrinsically or genetically worse in any way, just normal people.
