Hydrogen-Powered Tram Developed in China

In an effort to reduce China’s harmful and plentiful greenhouse gas emissions, Chinese company Sifang (a subsidiary of China South Rail Corporation) has developed the world’s first hydrogen powered tram. The tram took two years of research and development to complete, and will be powered entirely by hydrogen fuel cells. Since this is a tram and not a train, the top speed will only be 70 kilometers per hour and it will be used in urban areas only. It is designed to carry 380 passengers.

The tram will take 3 minutes to refuel and will have a 100 kilometer range. The company says the main benefits for cities will be cleaner air and reduced operation costs. The only emission will be water. It will not produce nitrogen oxides, as the temperature of the fuel cells will be kept under 100 degrees Celcius.

Question: What hydrocarbon is being used to provide the energy to create the hydrogen in another location? After all, there is no free lunch in physics.

    what a waste…. ..

    Slow, inefficient, expensive.

In short the result of idiots with too much money being asked to do SOMETHING.

Hydrogen is a turd. There are a few useful applications for hydrogen but this example is not one of them.

Hydrogen is NOT a power source. Hydrogen merely stores the energy from some other power source—.

Now if you could hook this baby up to some windmills or a nuclear power plant, you’d really have an interesting way to travel without using fossil fuels.

Given that China is still building coal-fired power plants as fast as possible it’s probably a safe bet the tram is designed more to cut urban pollution then to cut China’s total GHG emissions.

    Hooray! We’re saved!

Hydrogen is like ethanol. EROEI is less than 1. As Plant said, it’s just a way to store energy produced somewhere else, in all likelihood by burning coal.
