World Population Could Hit 12.3 Billion by 2100

World Population Could Hit 12.3 Billion by 2100 thumbnail

Researchers had earlier estimated the population would only reach 7.2 billion

The world population may balloon to anywhere between 9.6 and 12.3 billion by 2100, according to a new report that used statistics from the United Nations. The new estimates far outstrip previous calculations of 7.2 billion.

The root of the booming population is high birth rates in Africa, according to the report, published in the journal Science. The number of people in Africa is expected to rise from one billion to four billion in the next 86 years. Researchers found that there is a 70% probability that the world’s population will not stabilize in this century.

“Earlier projections were strictly based on scenarios, so there was no uncertainty,” UN demographer Patrick Gerland told the Associated Press. “This work provides a more statistically driven assessment that allows us to quantify the predictions, and offer a confidence interval that could be useful in planning.”

Were the estimates that Africa’s population would increase from 1 to 4 billion made before or after the Ebola epidemic started in west Africa?

No,it won’t stabilize, it will spike until the die-off starts. And we will have front row seats. I can only hope that we Americans will be able to buy the oil and gas that Africans can’t, so selfishly, I expect them to die first. Then we will pump out all their oil.

I know this sounds harsh, but I think the future reality will be as harsh or worse. It will no longer be ‘one world’, it will be first world versus third world. I don’t see it ending well for the third world countries.

  4. dubya on Thu, 18th Sep 2014 11:20 pm

And in a few thousand years we will be a squirming sphere of humanity expanding outwards at the speed of light.

And other useless extrapolations based on no limits to growth (where have I heard that before?)

Or … it could be < 12,300. We shall see.

Oooh look, another article advocating race war and blaming Africa.

    How original!

I guess that makes the master race supporters wet their pants with the hope of mass murder and genocide of the innocent.

That’s America for you… the stupidest kid in class, that thinks they have all the answers. Keeps raising its hand and getting told to stop because every answer is wrong.

The American idiot responds that they are exceptional, and facts don’t matter. It is all about FREEDOM, and DEMOCRACY, and LIBERTY (as long as you have the right skin color).

trickydick, the US is already a 3rd world country. You just don’t know it … yet. Ditto for Europe. Step outside and look back in with an open mind and eyes. You will see what I mean. When the security safety net collapses (Food Stamps, Welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, and all of the retirement plans you think are there), it will be obvious to even Americans.

I thought previously there would be a plateau of sorts would occur.? If the world does explode to 12.3 billion, it,will be a sad world to live in.

  9. Perk Earl on Fri, 19th Sep 2014 3:07 am

I never bought the 9.3-9.6 billion by 2100 bit, so this report does not surprise me as it fits what I thought it would head to, that is if we didn’t hit limits to growth. Which we are now hitting, but the bullet just hasn’t hit the bone yet.

All this talk of the year 2100 cracks me up, as if talk of it will mean we actually get there as a civilization. That in and of itself is arrogant. We should be talking about shorter term aspirations, like what will be the state of humankind in the year 2030? We can see that far off and none of us are too sure what it will be like once we get there, so viewing the future to 2100 makes no more sense than looking to the year 2200 or 2300.

I have seen some evidence that Makati1 is correct with respect to European nations being 3rd world. – At least in respect to asian countries.

I have several acquaintances that has lived in asia and when they returned to Denmark they say it looked old, worn out and with a degraded and degrading system.

It also feels that way living in Denmark: There is a clear feeling that its down – down – down every year.

The government cuts all sort of benefits, increases “shadow” taxation, manipulates GDP. Things that used to be free is now either gone or cost money.

And the stream of refugees and poor eastern european people is increasing all the time. But they dont come to get a better life and they dont want to work – they come to steal, destroy and live of public welfare.

  12. pat on Fri, 19th Sep 2014 4:25 am

its like saying the world oil production is infinite and will reach 2bpa. the carrying capacity of the world and limits of everything is already at the edge of cliff and the steep downhill ride had already begun. the crux is the 2015 the begin of the end of the world, the begin of crisis of everything. the world has already lost the time to prepare for the unprecedented crisis of total collapse, the fossil fuel shortages, the only question is not of if but when, and many not going to make it.

“I thought previously there would be a plateau of sorts would occur.? If the world does explode to 12.3 billion, it,will be a sad world to live in.”

Everyone (including Peak Oilers) wants population to level off by natural causes rather than having government get involved. But the longer it takes to occur naturally the more problems it causes. I think it is time for governments to go against the religions and take a stand against population growth.

  14. Davy on Fri, 19th Sep 2014 5:32 am

Come on, please, is anyone listening to the many comments and articles that we read continuously here about the many and varied predicaments? We are at limits of growth/societal diminishing returns with the vitals of liquid fuels, food, and water availability. Complexity is teetering and this will surely effect the vital element of distribution and production. We have been conditioned to growth for 200 years so we have a difficult time admitting the graph might just drop instead of the steady swing upward. Today’s food delivery system is very efficient providing food in areas that otherwise would not have enough either generally or in times of failed harvest. This food delivery system is taken for granted just as BAU globalism is. We absolutely cannot add many more people without derailing the global system which all our delocalized locals depend on. Some locals are much more delocalized than others in regards to food. IOW without a global food distribution system starvation is immediate. Asia and Africa are the worst in this case. Asia has more people in an area the size of China as the rest of the world combined and they can’t feed themselves now. Africa 1BIL is ready to explode 4BIL and they can’t feed themselves now at 1BIL. The rich west is in an economic descent and soon will struggle to feed itself. Where is all these food exports going to come from? The quickest way to a failed state is food insecurity. Multiple failed states will destroy globalism. Without globalism the vast food distribution system will breakdown. So tell me oh great ones of the world how will the current 7BIL (&growing) get more food and adequately distribute it without destroying the fabric of globalism? It does not add up and it is this type of talk that is useless, dangerous, and low IQ. If you look scientifically at this problem we are at the end of the rope now. All the needed scientific information is available now to show us this growth is not possible. What is not there is the will to admit we are at the end of growth. The elites of the world that control society do not want this story out so MSM only is allowed to say “UH OO we may hit 12BIL by 2100 “BUT” everything is fine now if we use technology, markets, knowledge, efficiency, education, or IOW more of the same that got us to where we are right at this moment. This is of course the definition of insanity as we all are aware of:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

  18. JuanP on Fri, 19th Sep 2014 9:53 am

Don’t worry, this will not happen. The world lacks enough resources to allow population to grow that much for that long.
I’m surprised Noob didn’t come back for more on this one. 🙂

  19. noobtube on Fri, 19th Sep 2014 10:46 am

How about this for the American dumbasses (the undisputed world leaders in that area)?

Africa is feeding Europe and America.

And, all the world gets back in return is the trash and garbage and filth that Europe and America create.

America is the number one trash producer in this world. No one produces garbage like the United States.

But, Americans are always whining about Africans. Why? Well, clearly, Americans are too stupid to realize that it is Americans that are causing the world’s problems and they need to be wiped from the face of the Earth.

The world’s resources are being used to feed American personal cars, American tanks and jets, American food distribution, American consumerism, American vacations/TV/entertainment.

African food, fuel, and energy is paying for American stupidity. Americans are literally stealing the food from the mouths of Africans. And, in true American exceptionalism, they have no clue how the gas magically appears at the gas station or the food appears in the supermarkets, by attacking other nations using the American military.

Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh truly represent what Americans are.

    Why?

Because Americans are low-grade scum who want to blame everyone else for the problems they are creating and causing while screaming FREEDOM, DEMOCRACY, and LIBERTY (which, interestingly, Americans never had and Americans know nothing about).

The world could easily support double its population if the United States were to disappear, today.

    No more American military.
    No more American Hollywood.
No more American banks (and TOO BIG TO FAIL, which is mind-blowing in and of itself).
No more American suburbs and personal cars (bye bye Hummer).
No more American sports and entertainment (what, I ain’t giving up no NASCAR).
No more American mostly food (McDs, KFC, Taco Bell).
    No more American brand names.
No more Monsanto, ADM, Union Carbide, GMOs.

The world would be a much easier and better place to live if these American a**holes just disappeared (and they will).

I just hope it doesn’t happen before it’s too late.

“It is slang for the grenade launcher attachment on the game Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It is commonly called a “noob tube” because you can most of the time simply point and shoot and, even if it doesn’t hit them the explosion often kills them.”

So noobtube is just an imaginary weapon in an imaginary world designed to fullfill delusions of grandeur and power, but I’m sure the NSA and FBI have flagged the reference.

Can you say “terroristic threats“? Betcha can!

Around the world we can find a food crisis, a water crisis, a declining fish stocks crisis, a Climate Change crisis, an unemployment crisis and an OVER POPULATION crisis.

Our “leaders” and politicians definitely fit that description. Can we ship then to Africa for “recycling”?

  28. noobtube on Fri, 19th Sep 2014 1:25 pm

Since Americans (and Europeans) are already dumping their toxic waste, obsolete “junked” electronics, and garbage in Africa (Ivory Coast, Ghana, South Africa, etc.)…

not only does Africa not want any more American garbage, but Africans want Americans to take back the garbage they’ve already dumped.

Maybe if Americans weren’t synonymous with garbage, their population would be the worthless garbage that is destroying the Earth.

Americans are the OVERPOPULATION problem. Can’t feed themselves. Can’t fuel themselves. Can’t handle their own waste.

Americans are simply worthless, useless eaters.

  29. J-Gav on Fri, 19th Sep 2014 2:03 pm

Inaccurate, Noob. TPTB in Africa like garbage, because they get paid to accept it – otherwise, why would they, meathead?

  30. noobtube on Fri, 19th Sep 2014 2:49 pm

I guess in your world, Americans (and Europeans) don’t illegally dump garbage in Africa (or anywhere else for that matter).

Americans and Europeans don’t steal oil, steal land, steal labor, steal food, or steal money. It’s always everyone else’s fault for what the Americans do.

I know. Americans are exceptional. Americans never commit war crimes.
    Americans never invade.
    Americans never overthrow elected leaders.
Americans never commit atrocities against the innocent.
    Americans are never the problem.

It is always the other guy.

American exceptionalism means Americans never have to take responsibility for their actions. Just ask Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Ted Turner, or Bill Gates if it is ever their fault.

It’s always the Africans fault (or the Arabs or the Chinese or the Brazilians or the Russians or the Aghanis or the Iranians) for American behavior.

Mitt Romney says so… the rules don’t apply to Americans… they apply to everyone else.

Dick Cheney says deficits don’t matter.
George W. Bush says the American way of life is not negotiable.

This is how Americans think the world works.

Much of the non-west hates the US and is working to take it down. To ignore that and make fun of someone who points out the West’ failure is only typical of the ‘exceptional’. But, he will have the last laugh. Wait and see.

Reality is a bitch … and then we die.

  35. GregT on Fri, 19th Sep 2014 9:05 pm

    Makati,

Whether he is right or wrong isn’t really the point.

He has nothing constructive to add to the conversation, he isn’t accomplishing anything positive, and he isn’t even on topic.

Furthermore, he is painting hundreds of millions of people with the same brush, and even insulting those people who would agree with him. Nothing more than a rant filled with hatred, discrimination, prejudice, and ignorance. There are plenty of rotten people in this world of every race, creed, colour, religion, nationality, and political affiliation. Just because many of them happen to be in control of the powerful nations of this world, does not make all of the people of those nations responsible for the actions of the few. Even for those of us that see the injustices, there is absolutely nothing that we can do to stop them from happening, even if we would like to be able to.

  36. Makati1 on Fri, 19th Sep 2014 9:24 pm

GregT, he has as much right to his opinions as you or I do. You do not have to read them, just as I skip over some here who rant without perspective.

He is more correct than wrong in many of his comments. That the brush is wide is because the guilt is also wide. A democracy cannot say “It’s not my fault”. It IS your and my fault that the USSA is plundering the world in it’s bid for world domination.

We cured Britain of it’s greed in 1776. After that the US backbone started to soften and dissolve. There is none left today. All here are too afraid of losing their ‘welfare’ than to revolt and kick out the greedy, psycho elite.

~30% of the US GDP goes to those ‘welfare’ payments. Yes, 30%. Probably more. When those stop, the US will be a 3rd world country in fact as well as name.

This devolution to character attacks and intolerance of differing opinions is not a promising direction for this PO.com cause. If we’re looking for “constructive” input, then that would be comprised of direct discussion of any points raised, rather than an attack on the motives or other qualities of the advocate.

    Noobtube has said:

    “Americans never invade.
    Americans never overthrow elected leaders.
Americans never commit atrocities against the innocent.
    Americans are never the problem.”

This is a sarcastic and inverse presentation. The point NT wants to make is clear, that in fact America does these very things. Therefore, what I believe would be a worthy response would be some evidence that these accusations are wrong. I’m all ears, NWR. Show me America never invades, has never overthrown an elected leader, and never committed atrocities against innocents (don’t forget to address the Mi Lai massacre).

The belief in American exceptionalism is admitted in both word and deed. I’m waiting for the evidence and arguments that there is no exceptionalist tendency in America.

  38. GregT on Sat, 20th Sep 2014 12:11 am

The article above is about projected population growth by the end of the century. It does not imply anything about a race war, exceptionalism, invasions, atrocities, wars, garbage disposal, or even OVERPOPULATION.

Personally, and I don’t think that I’m alone, there isn’t any hope in hell of the world reaching a population of 12 billion human beings. We are already facing environmental limits, resource limits, energy limits, economic limits, and food production limits. All of which are inextricably intertwined.

However, IF Africa is able to increase in population by some 4 billion people in the next 85 years, the only hope that it has in doing so, is through advanced technologies in medicine, agricultural and energy production, and transportation. Without help from the evil westerners, this will not occur. As it stands right now, if the west does not assist Africa, and the rate of Ebola infection continues on it’s current trajectory, some 1.2 billion people will die in Africa by this time next year.

  39. Makati1 on Sat, 20th Sep 2014 3:00 am

GregT, you are correct. If someone wants to refute what someone else said, then prove they are wrong. Calling names or making fun of them, will only prove immaturity of third grade school yard levels.

I say a lot of things here, waiting for an intelligent rebuttal with references that prove their point. The internet is full of proof, if they are correct. It will cause me to rethink my position. If they cannot do so, then I assume I am correct. Last time I looked, Google can give you hundreds of ‘proofs’ in seconds, if you are correct.

But, most often, I get a long rant saying nothing and occasionally am called something silly or made fun of. Those people I put in the Immature Box, no matter their age or nationality.

  40. GregT on Sat, 20th Sep 2014 3:45 am

    Makati,

You should already be very well aware, that I do not for one second condone what the west has done, and continues to do to the rest of the world, As a matter of fact, I find it deplorable. I have serious problems with American wars, invasions, coups, and above all else, American exceptionalism. I see what is going on globally, but there isn’t a damn thing that I can do about it.

There are many people in America, and in the west, that are just like me. They are tired of all the crap, they are tired of the wars, the killing, the overthrow of governments, the disregard for justice, freedom, democracy, and the rule of law, and they only want to live their lives in peace, like the vast majority of people everywhere on this planet.

The Noobs of our society do nothing more than royally piss me off. If they feel that they have something positive to contribute, then they should do something constructive themselves. Get out there and try to do what I already know that I cannot, and when they finally figure out that they can’t either, they should shut the fuck up.

I put the barking dog hypocrite expat in the same category as the noobster. They are both propagandists, ideologues, and comment hypocrites. It is barked by the expat that proof is on the internet but if that so called proof is not satisfactory to the dog it is considered propaganda. Anything and everything is bad about the west and the US while the third world especially Asia is in the right and is not contributing to any of the global problems. The logic of the expat dog and his childish friend noob is if only the US and the west could be eliminated global predicaments would vanish. The dog also wants to claim he is an American so he can take credit for his anti-Americanism. He is nothing more than scum who has moved to a third world country that is grossly in overshoot to carrying capacity with a country the size of Arizona and a population of 100MIL. He is all praise for his lifestyle and prep plans but if others here have plans he shoots as many holes in it as he can. People like that are generally insecure so they find faults in other to improve their image. He sickly fantasizes about NUK war and he relished mass death in America even with all his family in the US. He is truly a scourge of this site because he is consistently here with puk and spue. He criticizes my writing style while his is lousy. He likes to interject these stupid short responses. It reminds me of dogs in a fight then there is always the chicken shit dog that is right there near the fight barking the loudest but is the biggest coward. If one of the dogs fighting turns on him he scampers off. BTW, Greg who the dog is criticizing, is high on my list with respect just to show I am not down on people with anti-North America comments. Greg constructively criticize that which is bad in the US and Canada. I tend to agree with Greg but we do approach the issues at different angles and starting points. Internationally we differ some but I appreciate solid constructive views that are not necessarily my own. My views are evolving as time goes on. People like Greg keep my American point of view balanced. The expat dog on the other hand is like Noob here for narcissistic personal gain to support a failing of spirit from a world view that is not balanced, coherent, or associated with reality. They use reality bites to support their non-reality. I wish the expat dog would go off to his hole in the jungle so we could be rid of his spue. BTW I doubt the old man will ever survive there without medical help being in his 70’s.
