Helping People Understand the Power Grid: The Story of Electricity

Recently, the Institute for Energy Research launched a project to help people gain a better understanding of the electric power grid, a marvel of modern society that most people take for granted — unless its product delivery is interrupted for more than a few minutes.

This information project is timely, especially considering all of the changes that are being imposed on the grid by people who believe that Germany obtains half of its electricity from solar energy or that it is possible to operate a prosperous society for 7-9 billion people using just wind, water and solar power.

If you have family members, friends, or acquaintances who are confused about the system that enables power to be delivered to their wall sockets, please encourage them to watch the above video and to visit The Story of Electricity.

Where do I go to get more information regarding Germany and its sustainable steps to clean energy?

Few people know how the electric gets to that switch on the wall. I even had a client that could not replace that switch when it broke. He used to pay me to come and install a new one. Maybe he was afraid of electric?

Anyway, this is a good video.

Find different folks to live around. Electricity and how it works is pretty common knowledge. BTW lightning is dangerous also. Alert your neighbors.

“Few people know how the electric gets to that switch on the wall.”

And care even less. Just take it all for granted.

Back in the 1950s, French poet Francis Ponge wrote a text for the French national grid company where he spoke about “The Electricity Fairy.” Things haven’t changed much.

All I know is if I put my fingers in there, it hurts!

Perhaps it is YOU that should ‘find different folks to live around’. Electricity and how it works is not common knowledge. My son is entering his fifth year in university studying electricity and how it works. It is by no means commonly understood, and much of it is still up for debate among physicists.

The vast majority of people have little to zero understanding of ‘electricity and how it works’, and judging from your comment, that would include you.

Welcome back Greg after your long sabbatical.

    Thanks Davy.

Just returned from a cabin in the mountains of BC. No telephone or internet, and limited single phase AC. It’s going to take a while to wrap my head around the insanity of the city again.

Yeap, reconnecting to insanity is difficult.

The Institute for Energy Research appears to be a lobby group for the non-renewable electrical power sector.
