Sprawling From Grace

For as long as most Americans can remember the car has been the embodiment of the American dream. But with more than 250 million cars and trucks on the road, Americans have become slaves to this freedom. How can we reverse the ravages of suburban sprawl?

This is a good overview of the suburban car culture and its consequences in the USA now that we face collapse. With James Howard Kunstler and ASPO’s Randy Udall as main guests. Nothing new for the well informed crowd. It is good.

I would be more impressed if they were talking about the fact that the United States openly seeks more people. And in fact is predicting a population growth of 100 million in the next 50 years.

dashter, I think that increase will be Latinos from south of the border, and I do not mean the theme park along I-95 at the N/S Carolina line.

There once was a time when trolley’s ran thru the center of most major cities providing safe, convenient and reliable transportation to the masses. Bring back public transportation choices to the cities.

It is time to make cities more people centered and less auto centered. There needs to be more safe, walking and biking paths that connect homes, work, schools and businesses.

Apartments and businesses need to provide more safe storage areas for bicycles. By expanding the walking and bicycling choices and providing more mass transit cities become a much more attractive alternative to the suburbs.

Endless population growth is not sustainable.

The world adds 80 million more people to feed, clothe, house and provide energy for.

Around the world we can find a food crisis, a water crisis, a declining fish stocks crisis, a Climate Change crisis, an unemployment crisis and an OVER POPULATION crisis.
