Vietnam and China ships ‘collide in South China Sea’

Vietnamese naval ships and Chinese vessels have collided in the South China Sea, Vietnamese officials say.

The incident happened as the Vietnamese navy was trying to prevent the Chinese from setting up an oil rig in an area claimed by both nations.

No shots were fired, reports say. But Vietnamese officials said that water cannons were used on their ships.

The incident is the most serious between the countries at sea in years, with dozens of boats now in the area.

Vietnamese officials said on Wednesday that the Chinese ships intentionally rammed their vessels.

Several sailors were injured, AP quoted one official as saying.

Vietnamese maritime police official Ngo Ngoc Thu told media in Hanoi on Wednesday that Chinese boats had collided with Vietnamese vessels three times since 3 May.

Chinese officials said during a regular briefing on Wednesday that the oil rig was within China’s territorial waters.

“The disruptive activities by the Vietnamese side are in violation of China’s sovereign rights,” Hua Chunying said.

The incident came as Philippine police seized a Chinese fishing boat and detained its 11 crew in another disputed part of the South China Sea on Wednesday.

The boat carrying “large numbers of endangered species” was seized “to enforce maritime laws and to uphold Philippine sovereign rights”, the Philippine foreign ministry said in a statement.

‘Armed men’

China’s foreign ministry called the action provocative and demanded the immediate release of the fishermen, who have been taken to a Philippine port.

The Chinese fishing boat was being towed to shore and charges would be brought against the crew members, a Philippine maritime official told Reuters news agency.

China’s Xinhua state news agency said the fishing boat – named as Qiongqionghai 09063 – had been seized by an “unidentified armed vessel”.

“Several armed men forced themselves on to the boat and fired four or five shots in the air. They then took control of the boat,” Xinhua said.

China claims ownership of large parts of the South China Sea, including shoals and reefs, located off the coast of the Philippines.

Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, China and Taiwan all have competing claims in the region.

A hot summer is on the way! Are you prepared?

Mak, China is your neighbor. You should be saying “Am I ready?”

The Philippines and Malaysia seem to have the rights to most of those islands. Why is that a wrong assumption?

All signs point to peak oil.

Davey, I’m in less danger here in the Philippines than you are in the US Police State. And, yes, I am prepared.

The Philippines is a gnat and no danger to China. Much of the Philippine industry, malls and infrastructure is owned by Chinese Filipinos. They are everywhere. Some of my friends are Chinese and we talk about the situation.

The Philippine government will not allow the US to return and build a new base. Nor will they allow US planes or ships to carry any nukes while visiting. There has already been demonstrations by the people reinforcing the anti-base sentiments of the population.

If world war III breaks out, it will be US cities bombed, not Manila.

“… Sadly I must say as a West Point graduate, former US Army officer and still patriotic US citizen, I am no longer proud to be an American. Like millions of fellow citizens, I am both alarmed and outraged over how the US government has betrayed us all, resorting to the same totalitarian tactics of human rights abuse toward its citizens that Obama so frequently and hypocritically accuses of recently re-created cold war enemies Russia and China. With its Empire killing machine, America has tragically regressed into another pre-World War II Nazi Germany as the world’s worst human rights offender. With Americans the last to know, for years much of the rest of the world as victims of US Empire’s criminal aggression and oppression have viewed the US as global public enemy number one. It thoroughly sickens me to realize how this country I grew up loving, willing to at one time die for, and still very much love, has morphed and degenerated into the world’s most villainous “bad guy thug,” enslaving us who love our nation in police state bondage. …”

Mak, in your mind you are safer. The whole soth Asia area is in overshoot, sever ecological degradation, and the crosshairs of AGW. China is the big bully that will move on Pilipino interest as well as others in that region destroying normal trade links and leading to further unemployment. So Mak, your love of china will be a love that will bite you in the butt. As for Nuk war there are enough WND to go around to render the planet sterile especially your home that relies on warmth for all food production. I know I am in trouble with a nuk war. Mo has the B2 base. Nearby I have Fort Wood. STL and KC are both military production areas. So Mak if WWIII comes probably better to die quickly then to be subjected to the horrors of the results. You can be sure if Russia and or America has a large scale exchange China will be on the list. The US will not allow China to go unscathed I am sure. The US has more than enough to render both countries uninhabitable. The same is true for Russia. So Mak, how do you like your fascination and want of WWIII now? You have this misguided belief that WWIII will eliminate the US with China and Russia ascending to superpower status and no problems with food, climate, or the complex global system all locals rely on. You think this will be the happy ending. Get a grip Mak!!!

Nukes are so powerful the worlds largest cities would be turned to ash in minutes. I don’t know the validity of the article I read but it stated if 10 of these cities were put into the sky there would be climate freeze that none would escape. (which is why I lobby for 100 nukes instead if the 1,700 we have now). If Pakistan decided to implode, they could kill the world.

Boat, tell that to Mak, he can’t wait for mighty Russia and China to destroy the US. “And” you are so right “PAK” may be the weak link “WMD NUK RISK” their society, economy, and terrorism safe haven, and war footing with India are the ingredients for nuclear winter. “PAK” is a failed state with NUKS! How can you dress that up for a happy ending?

You picture of me is insane, along with your Anti-East mindset. Too bad. It blinds you to reality. J-gav has the correct picture of where I am coming from.

Mak, when you post your thoughts reread them. Then wonder to yourself if these thoughts are not one-sided in their motive and extreme in their desires for one thing and that is the end of your hated US. If you live by the sword you die by it Mak, propaganda has a way of boomeranging back and biting you in the ass. No problem with the east with me but don’t try to ram the rising east utopian region of future world hegemony down my throat. That is what you are doing Mak on a daily basis. This is what you do Mak, everything WEST – “BAD” – everything “EAST” good. That is a not Nature Mak nor is it the complex global system we live in. We will live together or die together. Even your supposed utopia Philippians is uplifted to prominence it does not deserve. I like the Philippians allot and hate bashing on them but do just because of your inflated portrayal of the place. Mak, all you need is some balance. You are obviously and intelligent guy! I am an American that loves his country and is bashing certain parts of it in the desire for some kind of reform. I get sick and tired of being put down and bashed daily and that is what you do! You have every right to do it and I have a right to bash you back. Should I turn the other cheek and ignore you yes, but sadly I can’t so just ignore me Mak like you do sometimes until you can’t stand it.

Davy, all of the various thoughts printed here, by those commenting, are one sided, the side the typist thinks that represents the world they live in. So what? You are not open minded either.

No, I do not see anything as being “a happy ending”. I see hell on earth probably before 2020. So what. I choose to be in the Philippines as it unfolds. I do not choose to be in what is already a full blown Police State. I do see the US having this war come to the homeland this time. But I cannot change the course of history. I can only observe and endure.

I reread all of my posts before I send them and they say exactly what I meant them to say. If I tramp in a few toes, maybe they need tramped on. Americans are, for the most part, blind to the situation they are in. When the 2X4 of reality hits they will not even see it coming. Too bad.
