Owners of “clean” cars might benefit of reduced parking prices in Dutch cities. This has been said by secretary of state of environmental issues, mister Pieter van Geel (Christian Democrats). Cities will be able to differentiate in the price they ask for a residential parking permit, and they can do that on the basis of the pollution level. A dirtier car will therefor pay a higher price.
To make this possible, Van Geel cooperates with minister of Internal Affairs, Johan Remkes (Liberals) in a law reform. The secretary of state wants the new law enforced as of January 1, 2007.
According the Van Geel, a similar approach is working well in Sweden already. There they have different parking prices for clean and dirty cars.
Labor backs the plans of the secretary of State. It is long overdue that the govenment creates tools for local authorities to improve air quality, says Member of Parliament, Diederik Samson (Labor).
