GS E&C develops natural gas liquefaction process

Consumption

GS E&C, one of South Korea’s largest builders, said Tuesday that it has developed an in-house natural gas liquefaction process plant.

The builder, which began joint research with state-run Korea Gas Corp. (KOGAS) in 2008, said its test bed plant located in Incheon, west of Seoul, has successfully produced liquefied natural gas (LNG).

“The plant can churn out 100 tons of LNG every day,” the company said in a press release.

It said the plant is the first to be built by a South Korean company without input from abroad, and effectively lays the groundwork for GS E&C to build such plants at home and overseas. The plant liquefies natural gas by subjecting it to extremely low temperatures. Once the gas is changed into liquid form, it is easier to transport and store.

South Korea is the world’s second-largest importer of LNG after Japan.

At present, only a handful of foreign companies, including U.S.-based Bechtel Corp., control the global LNG plant market because they have the knowhow in natural gas liquefaction.

Design work on the plant began in April 2009 with construction completed in March of last year. After completion, GS and KOGAS tested the facilities and systems for a year before starting production.

Wow, they managed to build a well known technology. Three soft claps for S. Korea.

What will they do next, build their own planes?

rollin – I thought it strange also. maybe the key is that the current stable of LNG train builders is very small and thus, given the growing demand, not very cost competitive. They could have made that point clearer by tossing in some more background.
