Bubbling Up: Geothermal Sees Big Global Growth

Alternative Energy

While geothermal power remains a relatively niche source of renewable energy, it is still a piece of the puzzle. EarthTechling reports that global production is set to double over the next few years – Bubbling Up: Geothermal Sees Big Global Growth.

Global geothermal power capacity could be on its way toward doubling, according to a new industry report, as projects unfold around the world, with a number of countries closing in on putting their first geothermal power stations to work.The Geothermal Energy Association, in its 2013 Geothermal Power: International Market Overview, said seventy countries are moving forward with nearly seven hundred projects. The group said that as of August this year, 11,765 megawatts of geothermal capacity were online – and 11,776 MW of new capacity were in the early stages of development or under construction.

    “A piece of the puzzle,” yes. A small fraction of it, in fact, but sure, why not? Where it’s feasible and safe …

    To keep perspective, we must never forget;

    Every Energy Technology Has Unpleasant
    Side Effects.

    Everyone is all upset over a nuclear disaster like Fukushima, rightfully so. All the while, coal burning is quietly killing millions every year.

    Coal miners worried about their livelihoods will point
    to ‘unsightly’ wind turbo bird kills or hydro dam fish kills and sediment build or geothermal earthquakes, or
    how much energy needed to make aluminum, even side with anti fracking folks opposed to cheap natural gas that is ruining coal mining. While I can’t think of what badness being done by tidal generation you can bet once they go into wide use, there will be a party held harmed.

    We are perilously close to a number of irreversible tipping points, that all have the potential to deem the planet uninhabitable for our species.

    The “party” that will be “held harmed” will be the human race. If we keep screwing around with nature, that “party” may very well be over, forever.

    We need to rethink our relationship with nature, or nature will do it for us.

    Geothermal still relies on many parts, ALL coming from oil/coal energy. How much ‘geo-power’ does it take to make and maintain a system? Is there enough NET energy to power the consumers AND build/maintain new equipment/components? I doubt it. Also, it take a distribution system. Maintained by…?

    And, there are relatively few areas that have the capability for geothermal energy, The Ring of Fire is the best place. And that area is major earthquake territory. There are a few geothermal plants here in the Ps and they plan to build more.
