Let me show you the world, says Swedish academic Han Rosling as he demonstrates the dynamics of population growth, child mortality and carbon dioxide emissions. The challenge for the world is to get everyone out of extreme poverty and get the richest people to use less fossil fuels so that everyone can share their energy levels, he says

Looks cool doesn’t it? Shifting bits of plastic around and talking about where we’ll need to be in 2100, when there’ll be 10 billion people … Sorry Hans, that isn’t going to happen as one or more population ‘correction’ events will have occurred well before then. War, pandemic, radiation leaks – take your pick.

Hans does not look at the effects of continuing CO2 output, his model is assuming a steady state output. A steady state output would wreak havoc on the world. Much as I admire his fantastic efforts in world health and understanding the realities of population growth, I don’t think he grasps the climate change and resource problems.
Also, his steady state CO2 model is a better than BAU model and implies vast improvement in the richest part of the world as far as fossil energy use.
