Employment/Population Ratios

Consumption

The BLS is out with a new employment report this morning.  The headline unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9%, but my preferred employment indicators are the employment/population ratios by gender for ages 25-54.  That ratio for men is as above.  Basically, the recovery stalled out in 2012 – we ended the year much where we started.

For women we get this:

The “recovery” here is barely visible at all – there is a little tick up in the middle of 2012, but it now seems to be eroding again.

Clearly, the labor market still sucks for a lot of people.

Early Warning

It’s only going downhill from here. Governments are cutting spending because they are so much indebted and revenues are falling, translating in more layoffs. Poorer middle class, maxed out on credit, strangled by high food and energy cost will be cutting on spending too. The private sector not selling anymore will dump even more people out of work. So watch out America will follow the European path pretty soon.

The BSL (Bull Shit Level) is rising along with the unemployment levels. The downsizing is gaining steam as the Great Depression becomes more and more visible.

If the 47 million people getting Food Debit Cards were standing in soup lines instead, it would stretch 2/3 of the way around the earth. The government doesn’t want this to be obvious so they give you plastic cards to stand in line at the super market instead.

More people than jobs — a recipe for disaster.

But wait— Obama says the economy is great!
