Israeli fighter jets have struck a convoy on the Syria-Lebanon border suspected of carrying sophisticated Russian-made surface-to-air missiles, Al Arabiya correspondent Ziad Halabi reported from Jerusalem on Wednesday.
Halabi said “security indications” pointed to a convoy carrying surface-to-air missiles being smuggled into Syria via the Lebanese border.
The Lebanese army had reported a heavy presence of Israeli jets over its territory throughout the night.
“There was definitely a hit in the border area,” one security source said. A Western diplomat in the region who asked about the strike said “something has happened,” without elaborating.
Syrian television confirmed the Israeli raids but said they targeted a research center in Damascus province at dawn on Wednesday.
The air raids come amid Israeli concerns about the civil war in neighboring Syria and fears that advanced weapons could reach hostile groups in the country or the militant anti-Israel Hezbollah group in Lebanon.
Among Israeli security officials’ fears is that Hezbollah could get its hands on Syrian chemical arms and SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles. If that were to happen, it would change the balance of power in the region and greatly hinder Israel’s ability to conduct air sorties in Lebanon.
Israel believes that Damascus obtained a battery of SA-17s from Russia after an alleged Israeli airstrike in 2007 that destroyed an unfinished Syrian nuclear reactor.
Earlier this week, Israel moved a battery of its new “Iron Dome” rocket defense system to the northern city of Haifa, which was battered by Hezbollah rocket fire in the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war. The Israeli army called that move “routine.”
Israel’s Vice Premier Silvan Shalom said on Sunday that any sign that Syria’s grip on its chemical weapons was slipping, as President Bashar al-Assad fights rebels trying to overthrow him, could trigger Israeli intervention.
Israeli sources said on Tuesday that Syria’s advanced conventional weapons would represent as much of a threat to Israel as its chemical arms should they fall into the hands of Syrian rebel forces or Hezbollah guerrillas based in Lebanon.
Israel has sent its national security adviser, Yaakov Amidror, to Russia and its military intelligence chief Major-General Aviv Kochavi to the United States for consultations, Israeli media said.
In Jerusalem, the Israeli military declined any comment.
“We do not comment on reports of this kind,” an Israeli Defense Force spokeswoman said.
Vice Premier Silvan Shalom, on Israel Radio, was asked if there was unusual activity on the northern front.
“The entire world has said more than once that it takes developments in Syria very seriously, developments which can be in negative directions. And therefore the world, led by President Obama who has said this more than once, is taking all possibilities into account and of course any development which is a development in a negative direction would be something that needs stopping and prevention.”

When do the bombers take of from Russia for Israel?
Arthur on Thu, 31st Jan 2013 1:27 pm
The Russians would NEVER do that. Out of the top of my head, 75% or so of the Israelis are Russian speakers, with strong ties to Russia. And more important, the Russians would give Washington the pretext for a cold war with Russia or worse, that could be perfectly used by Washington to impose draconian measures at home. Not hoing to happen.
The Israelis calculate that with the fall of Assad, they would have Hezbollah isolated from Iran, which makes sense for the Israelis in the short term. But in the long term they could easily end up as an Ottoman province, certainly after the US will be forced to abandon its NWO imperial project and thus stop being a garantor of the jewish state. A la Amalrik/USSR I am questioning whether Israel will make it until 2048. Israel was born in the bloodbath of WW1 and a bad idea from the beginning. Hitler was right.lol Madagaskar would have been a much wiser choice: beaches, green water, no muslims.

Come to think of it, if Assad is about to fall, he could handover his chemical weapons to Hezbollah as the ultimate revenge, as it was Israel/USA who instigated this civil war, via Sunni proxies Qatar and SA. Once the multicultural regime of Assad will fall, like any multicultural regime eventually, as Europe and especially the US will find out the hard way, the murderous ethnic cleansing of Syria will begin and Hezbollah will be back against the wall as it is cutoff from Iran. Shi’ites are those people with the lowest threshold to suicide. Maybe Israel should have contemplated that first. The outcome of the syrian desaster could very well be Hezbollah rockets raining on Haifa and Tel Aviv, loaded with chemical weapons. Israel could retaliate with nukes… and make itself impossible for all eternity in da hood.

What ‘chemical weapons’ are those? Every single Arab Leader the US hates is always alleged to have them, yet I dont think I have seen a single photo, or any evidence after the fact, that they even existed. Ghadifi was supposed to have em, now Assad has them too? In every single case after the US sets up shop, nothing is ever said about CW weapons ever again. Its only DURING the part where rationalizations for military attacks are being offering in the MSM.
Could it be that the Marines are too busy securing the oil installations and occupying the (formerly) state-owned banks to be busy to go round up any of those mythical CW’s Once they have the run of the country, you think it would trivial to do so, no? If Assad is defeated by the ‘west’, I somehow expect not one mention of CW will ever be issued from the US or its lackeys again. Not because its ‘top secret’ or some nonsense, it will be because they never were any in the first place.

Google “saddam chemical weapons kurds” in the picture mode. Syria is at least as advanced technically as Iraq, if not more.

And while you’re at it, google “US gave Iraq chemical weapons” to find out where they came from.

Yes Greg, the terrorists are us. The US never forgave Iran that it escaped the empire, so they sicked Saddam upon them. Stalemate. Next they send this girl ambassador April Glaspie to Saddam, suggesting he could get away with invading Kuwait…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Glaspie
…thus creating a pretext of overthrowing Saddam, after he had adopted an attitude towards Israel in an attempt to market himself as the leader of the Arabs.
It is easy to retrieve pictures of Blair and Obama shaking hands with Khadaffi or Rumsfeld with Saddam. Shaking hands with western mafia could spell your death warrant. Rumsfeld was the guy who on the morning of 9/11 carefully hid himself on the loo at the the safe side of the Pentagon, far away from the location where the bombs were placed, urr, where F77 hit the building.lol Next he helped collecting pieces of scrap metal from the Pentagon lawn, to gain time for the 9/11 project to finish without interference from responsible people, like he was supposed to be.

Yes Arthur,
Then they hired a New York PR firm that did a survey to determine the best way to gain public support for US intervention in Kuwait. The survey found that people were most likely to support a war if babies were being killed.
The news release of a nurse in a Kuwaiti hospital in despair over Iraqi soldiers “unplugging” newborn baby incubators spawned outrage amongst the US populous. Operation Desert Storm was swift and brutal, with reports of over 100,000 Iraqi soldiers killed.
It was later exposed that the nurse at the hospital was the daughter of a Kuwaiti prince, and that no such travesty had taken place.
It is also estimated that some 600,000 pounds of depleted uranium were left scattered around the countryside from US munitions and returning US soldiers had a very high incedence of “Gulf War Syndrome”, most likely due to exposure to chemical and / or biological agents.
So who are the real terrorists here?
DC on Thu, 31st Jan 2013 9:57 pm
Im sorry, I just dont have that reflexive {Your Arab Leader} has CW, lets bomb them before they attack New York anymore. Yes, Saddam had CW, but this whole CW are the new ‘nukes’ got old 10 years ago. Now the Jews are screaming there unprovoked air-raid was justified , at least in part, because of what?
You guessed it!
Chemical weapons…..
CW are just like ‘Al-Quaeda’, they are everywhere, but nowhere, right?
