Iran has officially inaugurated the first underground natural gas storage facility of the Middle East in the Qom Province, south of the capital city, Tehran.

The underground reservoir was launched Saturday at Sarajeh, near the city of Qom, in a ceremony attended by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

According to the director of the facility, the reservoir can now hold 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas, which can be increased to 3.3 billion cubic meters in the second phase of its development.

Over 750 million cubic meters of natural gas has so far been stored in the facility.

The achievement comes at a time when the Iranian nation is facing unilateral Western sanctions over its nuclear energy program.

On December 30, Iran Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi said the country’s natural gas production will increase by more than twofold to reach 1.4 billion cubic meters (bcm) per day within the next three years.

“Thanks to the [US and European Union] sanctions [against Iran] and with the efforts made [by Iranian experts], currently about 70-80 percent of [Iran’s] oil industry and refinery equipment are produced domestically,” Qasemi said.

In early 2012, the United States and the European Union (EU) imposed new sanctions on Iran’s energy and financial sectors.

The illegal US-engineered sanctions have been imposed based on the unfounded accusation that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran rejects the allegation, arguing that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Another reminder by the Empire’s propaganda mill of their trumped up reason for sanctions. Gotta keep that lie in the face of the sheeple or they might just question the Empire’s motives.

With Russia and China as friends, Iran does not need the West.

Let’s hope the storage is too deep to be bombed. As Bill says, Iran does not need the West. They can sell all the fuel they can produce to energy starved economic giants like China and Japan. Let’s see if they dare to block or even bomb Chinese liquid gas vessels.
