Iran plans to relocate an airport in the southwest of the country after discovering oil deposits under its runway, media reported on Saturday.

The National Iranian Oil Company “intends to buy Ahvaz airport due to the existence of oil deposits under the airport’s tarmac,” the state broadcaster’s website quoted Mohammad Rasoulinejad, managing director of the Iranian Airports Company, as saying.

“The government has approved the relocation of the airport,” Rasoulinejad said, adding that the new airport will be built 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the city.

He did not give any details about the oil deposits.

Rasoulinejad said that the airport is among “the country’s busiest” with some 30 flights per day, adding that relocating it would also enable its much-needed expansion.

The NIOC did not comment on the government’s decision.

I wonder when the petroholcs in the US realize that there are billions of barrels of ‘oil equivalent’ in the asphalt roads, driveways and parking lots of America and claim another ‘huge oil field’?

Just wait until oil extraction becomes more important than safeguarding water supplies.

When that happens, it will be obvious that we have peaked.

Wait until the French government decides to move Paris because of the shale oil deposits there. 96 billion barrel or 5000 days US consumption.

I doubt Mother Nature is going to allow us to exist long enough to burn all the carbon resources on the planet. Not even close. We are about to be swatted down like some annoying flies. How? Oh, a few degrees C. will do the trick.

i dont get it. you could do slant drilling (or horizontal drilling) and leave the airport where it is. go figure. well at least they found some oil that Mitt Romney’s wife can put into her two Cadillac Escalades.

One slant drilled well could cost more than relocating a small airport. (30 flights per day) Perhaps there are geological reasons it is not possible.
