Peak Moment 223: Dignity Village – A community by and for the homeless

“Anybody can come through our gates 8 am-10 pm and use all of our facilities. We have hot showers, a telephone, free computers internet-ready, our commons, offices, [and a free store of donated items.] Anybody has access to this.” Tour guide Jon Hawkes highlights this community’s generosity to the larger community: its residents well understand what homeless people need. Visit their greenhouse, gardens, houses, and business enterprises — all built with ingenuity on a city-owned site. [dignityvillage.org]

Why not in exchange for a little work in the gardens.

Maybe because, contrary to popular belief, gardening is a skill.

Why do they need to borrow a phone? Don’t they already all have free Obamaphones?

Beery, most people do not understand that raising food in a garden requires years of learned experience to work. Sure you can drop some seed in the dirt and maybe they will grow, but your potatoes have those funny spots and your tomato plants are being eaten at night by something. Your beans have huge chunks eaten out of them, and your carrots are stubby and look like something from the Grinch story. The lettuce raced from sprout to seed before they ever matured and the spinach never even sprouted.

Been there, done that, over years of gardening before I got to the point where I had decent soil and could grow most anything I wanted successfully.
