World Resources InstituteThe lion’s share of new coal plants planned worldwide would be built in China and India. Some 1,200 new coal-fired power plants are being planned across the globe despite concerns about greenhouse gas emissions from such generating stations, the most polluting type, the World Resources Institute estimates. Two-thirds of them would operate in China and India, it says. [World Resources Institute]
The United States and Mexico will share in both surpluses and water shortages under an accord overhauling how the two countries manage water from the Colorado River. The river provides water to more than 33 million people in seven states and in Mexico. [The New York Times]
Greenpeace looks into the use of hazardous chemicals in the production of global fashion brands, testing 141 items of clothing that it purchased last spring. Nonylphenol ethoxylates, or NPEs, were found in nearly two-thirds of the items, it says. [Greenpeace].
Early indications suggest that the World Trade Organization has problems with Ontario’s clean energy program, which requires that at least 50 percent of the materials in wind and solar projects initiated this year be made in the province. [CBC]

Funny table there NYT, all 36 of that list in your country have either been stopped dead in their tracks, or will be. There is no WAY India can afford 455 power plant anything. That list is of ‘proposed’ coal plants, NOT ones actually being built, or even likely to. A table like that would look far less impressive though and the article would have be called something else. Only China has the means and will to push through the numbers on that list, and its not even clear if China will ever see all its coal power built out that it currently wants. The permanent recession will take a big bite out of ALL projects, coal included despite the mis-guided belief that coal is ‘cheap energy’.

Coal is the clear choice for affordable energy, with natural gas in 2nd place. With the majority of the world still without power, there is no question the demand for coal will remain for a long period of time.
Contrary to what the other posters are saying….

“Global investment into renewable energy sources has for the first time surpassed monies spent on fossil fuel power plants, Bloomberg New Energy Finance has found.
Biomass, solar, wave, and wind installations drew approximately US$187 billion last year, according to the report. In contrast, a total of $157 billion was invested into traditional power sources. Bloomberg published its findings on Friday…”
