World’s biggest offshore wind farm planned

Alternative Energy

Plans for the world’s largest offshore wind farm have been submitted to the Scottish Government. The £4.5bn scheme, which could be built by 2020, would see 339 turbines stationed in the Moray Firth, 13 miles off Caithness.

The 670ft structures have already attracted opposition from campaigners such as Donald Trump who has claimed a wind farm will damage his new luxury golf development in Aberdeenshire.

Supporters say they will create hundreds of jobs and help the Scottish Government achieve its aim of generating 100 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. The scheme by Moray Offshore Renewables Ltd would cover 114sq miles of sea and produce up to 1,500MW of power, capable of supplying up to one million homes. It would take five years to build, starting in 2015. Developers said the energy would be sent to a power station at Peterhead after being collected at eight offshore electrical platforms.

Is Trumps golf development on land or sea?

These countries WILL be powered by 100% renewable energy around the year 2040-2050

why? Because, there will be no fossil fuels, and the renewables will be the only sources of power

the only question is, what level of lifestyle will they have? Will the biggest wind farm 1.5 GW will save the industrial and even more, the post-industrial lifestyle? dream on…

They aim to generate 100% of their energy from renewables ? What about the energy used in vehicles ? Almost all vehicles are powered by petroleum. What about the energy used in airplanes ? All commercial aircraft are powered by petroleum. Perhaps the article meant 100% of their electricity. Or perhaps they are dreaming.

Wait till a crippled oil supertanker drifts right thru the whole lot of ’em during a storm.

Serious, I think offshore windmill farms are a great idea, cause big windmills are so revoltingly ugly on land, a pure aesthetic vandalism. But they also seem kinda impractical to place offshore. Hope they use thick pieces of steel so it takes awhile to rust thru and fall over.

Go, Scotland, go. And tell Trump to get lost.

Norm, a five megawatt turbine is the equivalent of 50,000 men at work. When you realize this, these turbines beome symbols of shining beauty. Think of all the work you do not have to do.

yah but only if the wind blowing. if no wind blowing, equal to 0 men at work and i can do more than it on an exercise bicycle.

The nameplate rating of the windmill is seldom attained. Wind is not usually at the ideal speed for max power.

The rule of thumb that I think is reasonable, is that realistic power output of a windmill is only 10% of the nameplate rating.

so that would only be maybe 5000 guys not 50,000 guys. or 3000 guys who drank energy cola.
