A good friend of mine recently invited me in to give a talk on peak oil to his fellow researchers at the National Research Council Fuel Cell laboratory in Vancouver. As an alternative energy researcher he was concerned about the lack of dialogue around the ‘bigger picture’ context for his work – and was hoping to stir up the discussion. The ensuing presentation, titled “Peak Oil: Navigating the Debate”, was intended as both an introduction to peak oil and a filter through which the researchers could come to interpret the significance of events like Hurricane Katrina or airline bankruptcy and form their own opinions about the seriousness of the peak oil problem.
