I’m Susan Allen, The world’s population is projected to grow by three billion more people in the next 40 years. Here in big sky country it’s hard to fathom what that will mean to the rural west. When Open Range returns .Population growth like the national deficit is so overwhelming huge it’s difficult to wrap your head around and hard to understand how China and India’s growing middle class effects US beef producers. In a quick recap from the Animal Agricluture’s Annual conference earlier this month the fact two to three more billion people will be considered middle class by 2030 means global meat consumption will rise. Who will fill this need? I’d like to say US ranchers but I am afraid that due to our tight environmental regulatory constraints, land and water shortages, current high energy costs and crippling legislation it will be tough to for American beef producers to remain competitive when facing giants like Brazil, unless and here is the big if, if money is invested into developing increased productivity. In the next decade it will be critical for our land grant university and ag research facilities to develop ways to grow more cattle, faster on less land using less resources while also coming up with new food safety technology in processing beef. The numbers are daunting but if you are raising cattle they should be encouraging especially considering that global beef demand will need to increase a whopping 58 percent to meet the growing demand for meat by just 2050 , thrity eight years!

Ah got to love it when Big-Ag, blames Big-Gov for all impedeing its ‘growth’. What with all its..rules and reguluations. You know, youd think big-ag would be a lot more respectful of big-Gov.
After all, Big-Gov made Big-Ag possible. Not the free-market, not amerikas can do-dididlyoddly, and not even innovation, but Big-GOV! Over 80% of the chemical meat from grade D all the way to silver steak, is supplied by a whopping four companies in amerikaland. And the remaining 15% or so are gonna join em soon. And none of that would be possible without the support and guideance of Big-USGov. Its allways had Big-Ag’s back. So really, be nice !
In fact, I think Big-Ag should take Big-Gov out for a nice steak dinner sometime. Its the least those those 4 companies can do.

fecteau, actually, if you want to be a healthy human, you need the minerals and other nutrients that are found in meet in the forms our bodies can easily use. After all, we have an omnivore digestive system because we spent many hundreds of thousands of years as hunters and gatherers and we hunted meat and ate mostly meat and were designed to eat meat. If you notice the countries that do not have meat diets, also have the highest death rates and disease. Yes, we will have to cut back but give it up totally, I doubt it.

Too many people and too few resources.
Never ending population growth is not sustainable and only leads to more poverty, suffering and despair.
