Actually, they do not ‘produce’ oil, they retrieve and refine it. Mother Nature (natural law) produced it long before we were standing upright and climbing down from the trees.
Leaving little presence on the environment? That mouse/caribou at the end seems so happy. We just won’t see him starve due to global warming from burning that fuel. Out of sight out of mind.

As they drill deeper evidence is mounting that oil is in constant production by some unknown mechanisms deep in the earth and it miagrates to the surface picking up the organic compounds that have lead us to believe oil is the transformation of ancient vegatation. The BP well in the gulf was producing that oil: free of organic compounds. Wells in Russia have also found this type oil.
If this is true it would explain why all big oil discoveries produce far more for far longer than originally estimated. It also explains why depleted wells are often able to produce again after sitting for a time.
Of course the biggest implication is the fact that oil/gas may be in unlimited, perpetual supply.

Let’s say this oil is going to last perpetually (on a finite planet)… can it replenish just as fast as we take it out?
Could it be new technology is simply getting to oil we couldn’t reach before?

Kenjamkov, BINGO! We knew about oil sands / shale long ago but it was not profitable to try to retrieve it then. Now, at $125, it is. Yes, new methods / prices have made returning to old field to recover what we left behind is what is boosting out output, but that too will end soon. NO new oil is being ‘produced’ by mother nature. At least none that will be ready for another few million years. Can you wait?

SOS,
And failing that, maybe we can enlist the aid of Pecos Bill.
