Utilities expected to boost renewable energy sources

Current state plans would require Arizona utilities to increase their solar and other environmentally friendly energy base from a current 1.1 percent goal to 5 percent of their total production by 2015 and 15 percent by 2025.

Heather Murphy, spokeswoman for the Arizona Corporation Commission, which regulates utilities and sets energy policy, said the surcharge hikes still are in the draft stage and likely will be changed before a final plan is approved next year.
