The California Public Utilities Commission agreed Thursday to more aggressively pursue the reduction of electricity consumption.
Starting next year, utilities will be required to fund energy efficiency programs on an equal footing with building new power plants, according to a revised “Energy Action Plan,” which was developed with the state’s energy commission. By December, the Public Utilities Commission is to approve funding of the efficiency programs, which consumers will pay for in their monthly electric bills.
