Firms meet demand for energy efficiency

As the energy-efficiency industry turns its attention to the $239 billion-a-year remodeling industry, business owners that once specialized in narrow product lines are learning to be general contractors.

The aim is happier homeowners and larger contracts, since more work is being done to more effectively and efficiently heat and cool homes.
And homeowners who have experienced the expanded new services say they couldn’t be happier with the result. Initial phone calls seeking a new air conditioner have resulted in homes with new, better ductwork, additional insulation and the entire home more tightly sealed against leaks of warm air in winter or cool air in summer.

“It was great. This is the way to do business,” said Suzanne Hyland, who worked with Dan dePontbriand, owner of Mountain Air Comfort Systems Inc. in Castle Rock, on an $8,700 contract to add insulation, seal leaks and install a new air conditioner and furnace.
