Unlike domestic oil supplies, the nation’s reserves of coal remain considerable, so that this coal gasification/liquefaction process could prove crucial down the road as inevitably the availability of inexpensive petroleum declines. It is unfortunate that it has taken so long for the state and the country to recognize the merits of this technology, which was used by the Germans during World War II and South Africa during the international embargo to provide liquid fuel.
