Taiwan flights can use China airspace

Taiwan’s Premier Frank Hsieh said his government would allow Taiwanese flights to overfly rival China’s airspace for the first time in more than five decades.

The airlines affected — China Airlines and EVA Airways — still need to apply for China’s permission, Hsieh said.

China Airlines said it was studying the likely effects of the changes, so it was still too early to tell how much the company could save in lower fuel costs.

EVA said an early estimate indicated it could save at least NT$150 million ($4.7 million) a year on fuel outlays.
